THE GOOD:
Well... There are lots of weapons. But the best is not something you would expect. It is a melee weapon that you get very early on in the game. A crowbar. But it has infinite ammo, fast swing rate, and never has to reload.
The weapons are pretty good too! You have things from a 9mm pistol to a top secret government test weapon. You can even have a missile that you can guide in case you miss the initial fire.

THE BAD:
Ammo is very scarce. So you must run a lot of the times that you see an enemy.
The graphics are pretty good considering the time frame, but not for my standards. But I understand, it came out in 1996. So there is nothing I can do. The worst part though... well, it is not the worst so I wont put it there like it is. The real worst part are the puzzles. An example is as follows:
You are in a room that has a locked door Only a scientist has the clearance to open it. But the only ones left alive are in a room the saw blade looking things on the floor. And they need out. You can get in to them, but the door is locked from the inside. So by the time you find them, you can't go back to the door. The only way out is through the saw blades. There is three of them. And if all three of them die, your screwed.

SUMMARY:
Ok, here is the description of the game. The part I was talking about in the bad above this, it is posted below.
You are in a research lab, conducting an experiment, when it goes bad. The suddenly you see odd looking beings as you are teleported every where. Then you return to your lab station, or what is left of you lab station. It has been totally totalled. So as you leave it, you see that everything has been destroyed. Finally you realize that there was an explosion while you were being teleported, so you got lucky. But as you move along, you see another weird creature. But it can't get you. And right next to a dead security guard, you find a crowbar(The crowbar of research as it is called.) And another lucky strike for you. But you need it much longer after that. As one of the weird creatures attacks you. But it is small, so you can strike it down very easily. But there are more of them. Lucky for you, you find weapons along the way. So as you go along, you find out what happened as you listen to fellow scientists that survived, and eventually, the military. No one knows why they came, but they were there to clean up the mess. But if you can sneak up on them, you can listen to what they know of what happened. Eventually, you find a scientist who maneged to open a portal. So as you jump in it, you get transported to the alien world known as Zen. Then you fight even more of them than at Black Mesa(and that was a lot of them!) But you make it to their leader with some elbow grease and puzzle solving. And when you kill him/her, well, read below...

The part I was talking about above, well, here it is.
When you beat the game...
SPOILER!
SPOILER!

SPOILER!When you beat the game, you talk to this very odd man. He is simply known as the G-Man. You see him various times through out the game, but every time he is just barely out of reach. At the end, he talks to you for the first time. He says he has taken all your weapons, and gives you a choice. Fight an army of the strongest enemies in the game with not guns, or step into a portal that you have no idea where it takes you. And believe me, when you get to that point, you are sick of portals. So you have to step into the portal. Once you do, the screen goes blank and the credits roll. It was very good or bad depending on what you wanted. Though in Half Life 2 Episode 3, he is revealed. But I have no further information on him. I would write more about him, but that is all that I know that has to do with this game. I will write another one for Half Life 2 that will include more, as you learn more in that game. But for now, that is all.

THE GOOD:
Great variety of weaponry. Rockets can be guided. You can set traps with your "instruments". HD Packs available. Some good stuff may be hidden in crates/secret places, so there'll be some challenge. You can command drink cans from vending machines! You can drink the drinks! Cool weapons, which get real handy! Loading times aren't too long (they are far shorter than HL2's loading times). Interesting storyline.

THE BAD:
Places are sometimes too secret-too challenging! Maps are really polygonal. Some levels can get annoying when the player dies too often. Can get only 3 people to follow you. Suspense can cause players to go mad at their computer. You cannot see your feet! Also, NPCs can't follow you everywhere (They cannot crouch/jump). AI isn't very smart, which can be good as it can be bad. Some parts of the story may not be understood by players at first (I had to refer to Wikipedia for some information).

SUMMARY:
Half-Life is definitely good! But there can be some improvements... I suggest you try it, Half-Life Source (using the Source engine) and Black Mesa (Half-Life's last remake)

HL deserves its legendary reputation. When people follow you, you can get them to be baits or offenders or defenders. Whatever you do, you know you'll respawn where you last saved the game. and if you have not saved, it'll load from the last autosave! Simple!

The suspense is well preserved at the end, and can even get players intrigued so much that they look up for the true thing on the internet to know what EXACTLY is happening. Suspense which remains even after HL2...

The connection between Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Decay and HL2 is amazing. The way each piece clicks into each other is great, but to understand it fully you have to really look up on the internet... At least I had to...

After playing HL2, Half-Life sure loses some credit, but keeps most of it as it is the one who started the whole story. Players can recall some characters form other HLs, and even exclaim "Ooohh!" when just discovering a link between the characters. This exclamation may differ to "Aaahh!"

However, though the old graphics, Half-Life remains quite a gore game, for something released in 1996. No worries! there's a Content Lock for young players not to abuse of it mentally or psychologically .

Oh, and for players who play it for the first time, zombies will scare them like hell. Good luck with that folks. So will Bullsquids-they run into you like hell and spit poison at your face!

You can also, very important, use your environment to your advantage. Explosive barrels, Fragile Bridges can all help... Like they can kill you, so beware!

Also, you don't actually 'grab' a ladder when climbing/descending it, which is not very realistic, but in a way is good, and you can still shoot.

In certain levels, ammo can get pretty rare and you may get lots of ammo of one specific weapon (so will medkits/HEV chargers), so you must know how to manage your guns, wen to use your crowbar and when to run away.

So, you've got it, Half-Life is ~the~ game to have. It is advised you play the first one before all the others, and you play HL2, and the Episodes, yet after.

Oh and before I forget, Modifications are available and in Multiplayer, some weapons are like really fun. And in the one and only level "Surface Tension" you'll get to bomb targets. I'll let you see for yourself.

Oh crap, now I can't delete the comments I added (I didn't know I could edit the review) so there are 2 useless comments LOL.

Good Game!

THE GOOD:
*Lotsa lotsa weapons!
*Torturing scientists and security guards
*Weird ending
*Graphics are okay if you got the high-def expansion
*sound effects will BLOW YOUR MIND

THE BAD:
*Not as good as HL2
*No rag dolls
*NPCs follow you too slowly
*A.I. isn't as smart as it should be

SUMMARY:
The first game I played for my PC was Half-Life 2 (pure awesomeness!!!!) and after beating it, I decided to take a look at its predecessor.
Half-Life is also a can of condensed fun, as you take control of the silent-but-deadly scientist, Gordon Freeman. Except that instead of being in a run-down city to start with, you begin at the Black Mesa Research facility, flowing with scientists and security guards.
Though it starts slowly, the game quickly escalades into a frantic shooter filled with all the fixins (many enemies, loud noises, and plenty of ammo).
Thankfully, the areas of this game are very diverse, as you go from Black Mesa to a military base to an alien world, just trying to survive. Unfortunately, you'll get no zombie-punishing Ravenholm level.
The story is all based on perception, not feeding the player any cutscenes to give them a strict way of telling the story. But at the end, well, let's say I think nobody saw it coming.
So I'll leave by saying this: this is one hell of a joyride that no PC owner should miss!

THE GOOD:
Everything! To qoute brak "It's the shiz-nit!"

THE BAD:
Nothing, Perfection!

SUMMARY:
O.K. so you are Gorden Freeman a employee at Black Mesa Reserch Facillity and it start's out o.k. but then every thing goes KABLAMO! and now you must escape to the serface! However alien's have invaded and The Gov. sent in solder's and well it's not your day. Plus there is a Mysterious suited man (I call him lawerman) who seem's to be watching you...

The game uses a neat system where there is never any story sceen, so you are always look through Dr. Freeman's eye's. And with it's large variaty of wepons and awsome levals it's a must for any first person shooter fan. Scrach that, a must for anyone!

Over all you should'nt even be readin this any more you should be out buying this game! GO!!! NOW!!!

THE GOOD:
Weapons, graphics, storyline, and gameplay.

THE BAD:
Not really anything.

SUMMARY:
This was the first computer game that I ever played and I was quite impressed. I never thought my comp could handle any game but it did this very well. That is impressive as the graphics are pretty good and it runs smoothly even on a crappy computer. This is an excellent game. I highly recommened it to anyone with a computer. Especially since you can it so cheap now.

THE GOOD:
Immersive storyline, excellent graphics, large selection of unique weapons, excellent enemy A.I.

THE BAD:
Honestly can't think of much. It was a bit buggy at times but that's what patches are for.

SUMMARY:
Probably one of the best games I've played on any system. Right from the beginning, you are thrown into a world of unknowns. I don't think I've ever played a game that was written any better or even came close to the uniqueness of this game. Playing in the role of scientist, you are pitted against an alien invasion that resulted in an experiment gone awry and the military forces trying to contain the situation as you attmept to escape from a secret lab deep underground. The enemy A.I. is excellent in this game. Where the many different types of aliens may be rather dumb at times the marines are something else. They'll hunt you down by using such tactics as flanking or flushing you out with grenades. You'll play through all types of environments and face many different types of enemies as a storyline full of twists unfolds. It's almost like watching a movie except you get to control the main character.

I would highly recommend this title to anyone.

THE GOOD:
The action,weapons,levels

THE BAD:
the graphics is the only thing that lets this game dow

SUMMARY:
This game is one of the first and best first person shooter ever made!!!

The sound in this game is one of the best the gun shot and the electricblots ad the beez etc.....

The story revolves around the Black Mesa Facility, pretty much a nuclear bunker and Area 51 all rolled into one. You play Gordan Freeman, a geeky scientist turned hero you does most of the grunt work of science experiments for your cowardly, lazy colleagues. A simple experiment turns for the worst when the facility is turned inside out by what the scientists call a 'resonance cascade' and horrific aliens start beaming over from another dimension.

THE GOOD:
Completely immersive, and with utterly inspirational horro-based action. This is the best PC shooter of all time, yet to be bettered. Has thre greatest mod and online community ever.

THE BAD:
Slightly dated graphics, and a poor framerate in cases.

SUMMARY:
Every month or so, a game comes along that's really good, really playable. Every year, there's generally a fantastic game, and one you'll play for a good while yet. Every decade, there are one or two legends. Here's one of them.

Half-Life was an underhyped, underestimated 3D shooter. Before its release, it was virtually nowhere to be seen, people were instead looking forward to overhyped, overesitmated and just plain rubbish shooters such as SIN and Daikatana. How ironic that this game turned out to be worth countless amounts of the others.

Half-Life isn't a shooter like the rest of them. It completely turned the FPS genre around, from the no-brainer blastathons that came before, Half-Life was revolutionary - the object wasn't go run in, all guns blazing, before blowing the enemy base up and emerging a hero, before running off again to kill more people, no, not at all. Half-Life is about surviving. Ammunition is scarce, and you arn't the hunter, you're the hunted.

Half-Life tells the story of a nerdy young man named Gordon Freeman. Who works as a scientist in a huge top-secret research facility - Black Mesa.

You start the game as being able to control Gordon on his way to the lab - taking the monorail through the sinister caves and laborotries of Black Mesa, on every side of you, normal life goes on, Security guards try to unlock doors, Scientists work away in a bored fashion, and mechanics fix helicopters. Finally, you arive at your destination , the doors open, and once again, you find yourself in control, walking out, registering yourself as in that day, and going off to get your HEV (Hazards Enviromental) suit, and going off to do your job, just as you always do. On the way, passing scientists say hello, or complain about the ties thy have to wear, others struggle in vain to retrieve their money from broken ddrinks machines, all whilst you're in control. Its a living, breathing world, and you're just another person. Absolutely amazing.

Later on, Gordon goes to go and complete a slightly important experiment. You're talked through it by scientists, and everything goes to plan. Then you add a material to the experiment, and then it happens.

The entire room is levelled, lights flash out, and you hear screaming, suddenly, inhuman creatures pour out of nowhere, and run around, chittering madly. You pass out.

When you awaken, nothing is what it was - now you need to escape the massive complex. No longer in the control of the humans - the few that survived are struggling to stay alive, the complex is run overrun by countless hoards of Alien creatures.

As you struggle to escape, you'll find out that much more sinister forces are afoot, and armed with whatever you can get your hands on (ranging from a crowbar to a massive lightning based kill machine), you try to get out. That is the object of the game.

Its told so well that you can almost feel yourself become Freeman. The gameplay is fluid, and, in some cases, terrifying. And its definatly not from A to B. Fiendish puzzles and multiple rouths will see you avoiding security laser beams gone mad, climbing through air vents, running across beams on a massive ceiling, jumping across crates, swimming through toxic waste and, of course, dealing high calibre justice to whatever foul manifestation decided to cross you.

And that's just the single-player game. The multiplayer's out of this world. From the normal deathmatch to much more - the classic mods Team Fortress and Counter-Strike add so much more to an already fantastic game.

Yes, it is dated, but the story is told so well, it really won't matter. Its hard to reccomend anything as much as this game, and that's very high praise, coming from me.

THE GOOD:
decent graphics, intriguing story line, good multiplayer mode

THE BAD:
Graphics look a bit outdated now, a tad slow on loading

SUMMARY:
This really is even now a great FPS. It plays at least aswell as quake but has a nice storyline to boot.

The graphics even though it's an old game still look nice and it generally plays quite well.

You can probably pick thisd up quite cheaply now and I'd highly reccomend it.

THE GOOD:
Great story loads of monsters and multiplayer

THE BAD:
Well..Now the graphics are a little out of date

SUMMARY:
Well Half Life on the PC is without a doubt the best on in any format with mods and great gameplay you'll come back for more. The weapons are so cool like the shotgun when you fire the shotgun in secondary fire it turns to a double. The game its self is cool and the monsters are cool on hard mode the games is HARD trust me. I suggest this game a must for people who love first persons.
