THE GOOD: Completely immersive storyline, addictive gameplay, enjoyable battle system, Materia management, Wonderful character developement (storywise).
THE BAD: Unpredictable save points, Zero control of character stats and leveling, lack of "journal," poor porting of console commands SUMMARY: I was drawn into the title from its notoriety, and I was not disapointed. Shortly after starting into the game you find yourself, drawn in to the story, wanting to know where the characters are heading. The writers were great about sprinkling little bits of foreshadowing into the early points in the game, just to get you wondering what's going on. The battle system is turnbased, more or less. Basically, you form two groups, (you and the enemy) and you take turns attacking each other, except the order is determined by Time. after each attack you have to wait a certain amount of time before your next turn. This time can be modified (shortened/lengthened) by spells and stats. It sounds more confusing than it really is. Once you do it a few times you'll get the basic idea, but I recommend reading the manual for some advanced controls.
Materia This is a biggie. This is where the bulk of your character management comes. choosing what materia your character has equipped, determines abilites, stats, and role. As you collect more and more choosing the right combinations can have major repercussions.
The main seller for this game is the complex and very interesting storyline. You find yourself really caring what happens to the characters. One very poignant moment involves one of your party members struggling (vainly) to come to grips with their feelings for the main character. But you also find yourself drawn into the big picture, trying to find out just WHO IS pulling the strings, and who is the real enemy? I guarentee, if you don't cheat and read a plot synopsis, you'll be kept guessing right up to the big plot twists.
Bad stuff: Save points... Lord this was frustrating. save points were very unpredictable in this game. Sometimes you'd have a save point every five minutes, other times you'd go up to an hour with no opportunity to save.
Character control: I'm new to the FF series so maybe this is old hat to some, but it really bugged me that there was no opportunity for me to adjust me characters' stats as they leveled up. You can check your stats but not control them. This keeps you from having closer control of what your characters are best suited for.
Journal: There is none. in a lot of instances its very unclear of where you need to go or what you're supposed to do. In those places its best to talk to anyone you can find. Nevertheles you'll often have to resort to just exploring the world map and going whereever you can reach.
Controls: If you're using a game controler on your PC this isn't an issue, but if not then you'll find that the placement of the controls and thier functions to be very frustrating at times.
Yet despite my qualms I still consider this game to be a hallmark for RPG's. It really shows that gameplay should not come at the expense of story and Vice versa.
A definite buy. |

Best Game Ever? | 5.0 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Everything. Hardly a glitch with this game.THE BAD: Nothing. SUMMARY: Concept- Your an X-SOLDIER who is trying to save the world from a very evil man.
Graphics- 10/10 This game had awsome graphics for its time. They may even impress you today. The glitch with them is that the characters don't look atall real. They look more like puupets.
Sound- 10/10 The sounds for this game are beutifal. I am always humming them (especially that boss theme, you gotta love it it). The battle theme is awsome, it makes sense, not anything sissy, nice and hard core.
Playability- 10/10 Nice. like most RPGs ofcourse. Not much to explaine.
Entertainment- 10/10 Best part of this game, and here it comes. The entertainment for this game was off the charts. Ride your Chcobo, play a war game, ride your airship, and even sink into the dephs of the ocean and fight and the dephs of the ocean, play at the arcade, game points, ride your bike, obtain different overdrives, get wo secret characters, unsolve puzzles. Yes people, this is all possible to do in the worldof Final Fantasy VII. This was one of the coolest entertainments I have ever seen.
Replay value- High You'll be playing this game till your old... Trust me.
Rent of Buy- Buy Too long to rent. To fun to rent. Plus it's cheap now a days, go to your nearest Game Stop and get it used for 15 bucks.
Bottom line is that this game was AWSOME. Now to answer that much asked question that is the title. "Best game ever?" Could be. Many Final Fantasy fans and many non Final Fantasy fans were persuaded to get this game. It is possibly on the greatest games ever, ask most people, they'll say yes. And if no, trust me, they either havn't played it or it's close to best. This game has the greatest stats any Final Fantasy has ever had. It has made in history in the nation of Video games. Scoring perfect 5's, 10's, and 100's all over world wide revews. The best part of this game would be the entertainment. Of course, that's the biggest thing gamers look at in a game. If you ask me, por anyone they would say the graphics are awome, the only person who wouldn't would be 20 years in the futuire where no one had any idea how crappy grapgics were and are used to their own virtual reality. Aside form fun, this game is long. Very long. This game spams 3 CD's of non-stop action and fun. If you ask weather rent of buy, this would definently be a buy. It's too long to beat in not even 5 days, and to much fun to finish in just 5 days. You will still be playing this game even when you are old, so don;t worry. By the time Play Station 14 comes out people will still have their old much loved, much admired Final Fantasy VII. In this game you get something called materia wich is abilties you get, likle death blows, summons, fire, etc. So this is one new addition ti the battle system. In conclusion, this is easly one of the best games ever. |

THE GOOD: The levelling up system. The materia system was the best of any final fantasy game in my opinion. This was the first Final Fantasy to include FMV's, and they are truly stunning!THE BAD: There simply isn't anything bad to say about this game!
Users running the game on XP might have problems when getting to the chocobo races at the gold saucer, but there is a fix available for that! SUMMARY: If you have it, then you already know. If you don't have it, go and get it!
I've played this game through twice on the PS1 back in the early days, and had to go out and find a PC copy of it to re-live the good old days. No other Final Fantasy game comes close to this, with the expection of Final Fantasy X, which is a close call, and there are elements of VII which I'd have liked to have seen in X. |

THE GOOD: EverythingTHE BAD: Perhaps graphics, but nothing more. SUMMARY: Final Fantasy VII is undoubtebly one (if not the) of the best games I have ever played perhaps even shaming all of it's predecessors.

The only real criticism I give for this game is the graphics seem sort of 'chunky' in a sense but square have created a patch to improve the graphics on the PC which I admit changes the quality of graphics significantly.

First of all unlike all of the other earlier Final Fantasies FFVII is set in a sci-fi-type setting whereas the others were set in a kind of medievil athmosphere.

It has also introduced the use of Materia which may be simple but is still one of the best systems yet.

I Have played all the Final Fantasies from 1-X-2 (only ones yet released in Britain). And in my oppinion this is the best one yet.

Overall: 5/5 Keep it up Square! |

A true classic and master piece | 5.0 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Story Line Characters Replay Value Sound Graphics GameplayTHE BAD: The game eventually ends! SUMMARY: The Final Fantasy series has always been my favorite game series because Square has always worked their magic and made each game unique in its own way. Final Fantasy VII takes place in a world where it is run by a evil empire known as Shinra. You take the role of Cloud Strife, a Ex SOLDIER from Shinra, he joins a rebel group known as AVALANCHE to destroy Mako reactors, which are destroying the Planet slowly. But what happens next is beyond anything that they ever imagined.
Final Fantasy VII features one of the best story lines I've ever seen in a video game. It is the only game that has ever had me emotionally attached to it the way I was, I felt for the characters, when somthing good happened I was happy, when somthing bad happened I was sad, when the classic death of Aerith happened I cried... When the bells rang I knew the bad guy was there and it sent chills up my spin as the tall man in a black cloak appeared out of nowhere with his massive sword, who showed no mercy for those who dared challenge him.
The music in Final Fantasy VII is a true work of art. Every song was amazing and put in the complete emotions into all the scenes that they appeared in.
The replay value of Final Fantasy VII is endless and will have you playing for many many years to come, as long as your computer lives or you PSOne console. I have been playing FFVII (Final Fantasy VII) since it was first release in 1997, and I still play it everyday.
Gameplay in FFVII is simple at first, you attack your enemies and heal when your injured bad, and cast some spells using your Materia. But the Materia system quickly becomes complicated as you can do Materia combinations and let your imagination go wild with what you can do with it. By far the materia system in FFVII is my favorite over any of the other games in the series.
Overall FFVII is well worth your money and I recommend it to ANYBODY, wether you are a Rpg fan or not you will love this game just simply because of its beauty and the genius that was put into the story line and characters. FFVII is the meaning of a true classic and will remain in our hearts forever.
Excuss me though, I must go now...I'm going to play Final Fantasy VII ; ) |

Final Fantasy VII - PC | 4.4 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Most all of the points that made this game a bestseller on the PSX have stayed intact; the script has been cleaned up to correct some minor translation-flaws.THE BAD: The graphics could and should have been improved, the sound has been done horrible injustice by being converted into MIDI. SUMMARY: (Don't mind me as I copy/paste most of my review from the PSX-version, it's mostly the same - I'll discuss the changes a bit further on)
The planet, of course, is in jeopardy. On one side, a soulless conglomerate is draining its lifeforce and selling it to the people, on the other side, a sleeping demi-god has awoken, and he's in a very bad mood indeed.
You play the role of Cloud Strife, a mercenary who abandoned his position in the militaristic SOLDIER-organization, and you'll find yourself in the middle of all this. While you try to make your way through the story you'll find out more about Cloud and the people that join him - perhaps more than Cloud himself would like to find out.
Where to begin on this one? It's possibly my favourite game of all; it's certainly my favourite Final Fantasy. Sporting a rock-solid storyline and intricate gameplay you can easily allow yourself to be immersed with, you'll find yourself playing this game again and again. It has immense replayability, mostly because the story and characters are compelling enough to keep you returning. I've mentioned how the field-graphics aren't up to par, and they really aren't. But this game is good enough to overlook this flaw.
And now for section where the PC and Playstation part ways: the bad part. Final Fantasy VII was one of the first titles on the Playstation, and was released several months later for the PC. By that time, the game could've had more than a few polishes in terms of graphics; the field-graphics are still lacking the detail in texture that they deserve. Instead, all the PC-owners got, was an increased resolution, which does not do the game much good. And what really stands out, is the music - and not in a good way. Gone are the digitized sounds from the PSX-version, they've been replaced with horrible MIDI-renditions. I can't help but wonder why - because the music in the Playstation-version was beautiful, memorable, and some of Nobuo Uematsu's finest. Why replace this with MIDI-jingles at all?
However, despite these two flaws, I still stand by the conclusion I drew up for the PSX-version: This is the game that people bought a Playstation for, in order to play it. If you have a Playstation, a Playstation 2 or a PC and you're still without Final Fantasy VII; you've been missing out for nine years now. Go out and find this game, and learn what everybody else already knows: This is one of the best games ever made. |

THE GOOD: Lets see......The graphics are the best of its time, fot a game made in 1997. The music...yes the music! its awesome, brilliant. It souns even better if your game console is hooked to your stereo! The battle system is simple and easy to understand. The soryline is complex but still makes sense. Did I mention the music?THE BAD: The charachters sometimes look like a guy took some body parts and just stuck 'em together. The controls are a bit wacky, O being confirm and X being cancel. Travel on the world map takes too long, even with the veichle you get eventually. Also, you cant see your enemies. SUMMARY: This game was way ahead of its time, being made in 1997. The graphics are good, especially the Summons, which really stand out against the usual graphics. As I mentioned before, I love the music. The batte system is easy to understand. There are various magic spells, enemy skills, special skills, and the such which can also be upgraded. The storyline is complex, it makes sense, but is kind of cheesy, like most RPG's. You must stop the organization led by Shinra, which is draining the planet's life blood, mako energy. But it goes deeper then that....I wont spoil it.
Of course, even though it sgraphics were good for its time, they look wierd sometimes, like someone stuck together body parts unevenly. Also the controls are whacked, especially if you've played other Square games like Legend of Dragoon or Chrono Cross, since here O is confirm and X is cancel. Another problem with many Square games is that you have to be at a save point or on the world map to save. I could name about 5 right off the bat. And, like in all the Final Fantasy games, you cant see your enemies.
All in all, the game is a pretty good deal, for its price of around $15 today.

THE GOOD: The gameplay is awesome, the materia system is easy to learn and has good combos in it, Storyline is awersom, Graphics these days for the PS1 are better but dont forget this game was made in like 1997 so that makes it's graphics awesomTHE BAD: WHAT YA TALKING ABOUT? WHAT IS BAD? SUMMARY: The best FF ever. This is the Very first Final fantasy to use a 3d world! It came out perfect for just about every single gamer! And also the characters in this game are easily adored by all and of course half of the forums in the FF7 forum are about the things in the game that are left a mystery. So if u r an RPG gamer that doesnt have this game get it! |

THE GOOD: Great story line, wonderful sound track and altogether a truely inspired game from the genius that is squaresoft.THE BAD: Bad points...*thinks hard* the graphics look outdated now SUMMARY: This game is a real gem in the series, while I don't think it's the very best game in the series I still think it is an amazing game and a true classic.
The storyline is greatly thought out and you will really feel for the characters and maybe even cry at a certain event in the game which I won't spoil for those who haven't got there yet. The characters are very well done and highly believeable from the cocky yet quite heroic cloud to the sweet kind Aeris and the in your face Barret and of course Sephiroth, who is still the most badass ff bad guy ever.
The sound track is extremly enjoyable, some really nice music in their and greatly composed as always with the ff series. The character themes are really nice to and some of them are quite emotional I especailly enjoyed Vincents theme. Also tracks such as the boss battle where very inspiring and good for firing you up ready for a battle.
The gameplay is just brilliant, the controls are easy to master the material system is easy enough to get to grips with but will take a long time to master, still it is very rewarding when you do so. The battle system in general is very fluid and works very well. It also has a lot of reply value and you will find yourself going back to this again and again even years later.
All I can say is if you haven't played this game you've missed out on something amazing, go and buy it now. |
