THE GOOD: good graphics, good sound, nice multiplayer, active community, lots of strategy, dark atmosphereTHE BAD: nothing really serious SUMMARY: first about what was said by others: " would hope that one character has more than one attacks, so it would live up the battle and strategy." is that way. as example the doppelganger can either or attack or clone a creature. or the wolf guy can either deal damage or morph into a wolf. i personally like it this way. the units are already complex with their damage sources, wards, immunity, ranges and whatever.
about the game itself: i like it more then homm4. especially because of the dark atmosphere, the smooth animations in the battle scenes, the nice effects and all that. i miss that a lot in heroes. too it has a far greater longterm motivation. first u got the campaigns for the 4 cities, then you can do it with 3 different people, then at different difficulty levels, then you have the lots of nice skirmish levels for single and multiplayer and on top it has a map editor that is very advanced for such a game and allows you to create great maps that offer far more then just slay everything or find an item.
ive to say that the screenshots on neoseeker are outdated, dont appear in the game and especially the face pictures of the units are now far better then on those screenshots.
the graphic is, unlike etherlords, 2d and has the tile system but looks really nice. and i commented the battle graphics too. the sound is very nice too, really dark and fitting and especially the voice samples of all units and heroes are very proffessional. the gameplay itself is very nice. it has this "just 2 more minutes. i need just 30 more xp to evolve the death dragon into a dracolith." about the strategy aspect: you set up your units before you fight and cant change the position anymore. this is another aspect of the longterm motivation because there are always new possibilities how to set up a group and try how it works. it is one of the few games i never deinstalled over a long time.
to sum it up: great game. i think that homm4 is more for younger people with the colorful graphics and squeaking dancing critters, while disciple is for people who like dark atmospheres and deep strategy. |

Unimpressed Battle System | 4.0 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Good graphics, 3D sound, story line.THE BAD: Some sound problem, unimpressed battle system, experience and magics. SUMMARY: Well, the main flaws IMHO is the battle system and magics.
I would hope that one character has more than one attacks, so it would live up the battle and strategy. Also, the experience is crawling, and need long time to upgrade a unit (in a QUEST game, it's usually upgrading nearly the end of quest).
Magics, IMHO, should use on battle screen, not world screen. The Mage should only can use proper magic that suits it's class.
One minor flaw is the corrupted sound sometimes. It could be my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or the game sound engine. But, a good sound engine should be tested to a bunch of many soundcards out there. And a Santa Cruz is a common soundcard now.
I have to praise the other part of the sound engine, though. Sometimes, you'll be hearing a good 3d effect like a bird sound (ambience) that pass us from left to right, or forward to backward.
The graphics is nice too. I like the main menu graphics. I like, how the screens morph when it displays a submenus.
The story line is good also, and is the primary reason why there's a DISCIPLES II games. The DISCIPLES I story itself is good, but have not-so-good graphics. |
