I'd love to go up to Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya and get him to teach independent video game developers how to make a *bleep*ing video game, because Cave Story is a damn fine game that blows the competition out of the water before it even existed. Before Braid's success lead indie developers to believe that pretentiousness was synonymous with quality, Cave Story lead us to believe that beneath the smoke and mirrors that began to form with AAA games lied independently developed games with genuine creativity, ingenuity and a sense of wonder that came with games in the past. A passage through an immersing game world full of things that'll kill you and things that drive the adventure further, Cave Story relishes in old school tropes without essentially being an NES game on your PS3. Instead, it's a retro game with modern touches that actually matter, becoming an experience of its own that still has yet to be topped.

Being a video game developer can be a thankless job – indeed, you could spend years planning, designing and refining a game, only for somebody to come along and say “what a piece of shit”. But what if I was to tell you that one of the finest games in the past ten years originally started as freeware in Japan, only to be touched up and available not only around the world, but on the Wii, the DSi and eventually, even further touched up and made available on Steam and the 3DS? What if I was to tell you that it was originally done by one person during his free time? That fact made me shit bricks, mainly because Cave Story is a fantastic game that manages to outright destroy its competition, 99% of which consists of big studios with enough people to populate a small African village who do this for a living, and it was initially done... by just one person. There's generally plenty of titles out there these days that fall under the indie umbrella, so when one of them manages to stand out and get recognised so well then you know you're in for a treat. Cave Story, while unashamedly retro, is essential gaming to those seeking to indulge in the indie scene, showcasing just what can appear even when there isn't a AAA gaming giant behind the title.
So let's go back a moment and pick on one of the more obvious traits of the game. Yes, Cave Story's style is entirely themed around retro graphics you'd associate with the old systems. This port has both the original graphics and the new remastered visuals, and hopefully you'd only click the old graphics out of curiosity, because a fantastic job has been done on the new graphics making look closer to a SNES era title. That may still be enough to put people off, but honestly it shouldn't because Cave Story still looks great.
