THE GOOD:
Graphics, even today as up to par. Spectacular FX, awesome AI, awesome Weapons. Good story to add to Descent one and two. Motion Sickness is retained. All 3D api support: glide, opengl, direct3d... Sound is superb. Multiplayer is amazing.

THE BAD:
High system requirement. Anything less than a 400 mhz and a 3D card and you're screwed in the frame rate area. Lag online, but then again, what game doesn't have lag? Weirder Automap.

SUMMARY:
You're given briefing, and you go back to the mines. But you also get an outside look also with awesome rain FX. AI is hard at times. All the robots act differently. I don't really like the automap, but it's weirder than before; it's still the same basic format though. Good old Automap.

Single player is immersive. Music is cool, Sound effect also. If you liked the Originals Descent 1 and 2 then get this one. I one is way better than Descent 2, but Descent 1 is still the ultimate classic in my heart; but this sequel lives up the legend of Descent 1 released back in 1994-95 I think.

Guidebot is now standard equipment. that's better and he's pretty smart, but he acts dumb every once in a while and gets lost, but very rare.

Weapons are all the good old ones. With added goodies, Microwave, and Sharks, and Frag, and NAPALM!!! NAPALM!!! The fire is really cool. Napalm robos can flame you and you can catch fire just like your enemies, and use your guidebot to extinguish the flames of death.

Multiplayer is fast paced. Especially in the small level called the Core.

Patches for game updates are really small, about 2 megs. Unlike most FPS's like Half Life where their patch is 60 megs. Descent 3 programmers are modem user friendly.

Menu interface is point and click. Customizing keyboard and joystick and mouse is too easy, just like old times, but with Windows PNP capabilities.

Learning curve is too easy if you're an old Descent player/fan. Else you gotta lot to learn with this 6 degrees of freedom.

I suggest you download the Demo first if you've never played any game in the Descent series (not Freespace, or Undermountain), it has the Virus mission which isn't too hard. Once you get the hang of it, go buy this game, it's remarkable!
