THE GOOD: Good variety of gameplay. All 4 turtles are playable.
THE BAD: Poor graphics & sound. Not as much action as you might expect. No multiplayer options.
SUMMARY: The first TMNT NES game was nothing like it's arcade counterpart, despite being released after the arcade game made the rounds. In this game, you controlled the turtles through several large stages, mainly through such environments as sewers and rooftops, and also driving around in the turtles' signature ride, the Party Wagon, on missions to save April & Splinter from arch-rival Shredder and rid the city of the evil too. The graphics of this game are not very good-they lack detail and there are frequent problems with flickering during gameplay. Sounds & music are a little better-the music is passable while the sounds stand out, especially the weapon sound effects which have a nice sense of realism. Controls are about in the middle-they're not horrible but could be a little more responsive, especially when trying to control your jumps in mid-air and switch between the various weapons you use. You also have to pause to switch turtles-not bad but being able to switch on the fly would have been more convenient. There's good variety in gameplay between side-scrolling and driving stages, but there's too much doubling back to previous areas. While it's nice that an attempt at something different compared to the arcade original was made here, the formula doesn't work as good here, especially with no multiplayer option. It's decent if you want a challenging game, but TMNT fans are better off getting TMNT 2: The Arcade Game instead.
