THE GOOD: Excellent graphics, sound, controls, and gameplay. High replay value.
THE BAD: Not much different from the other Mega Man games.
SUMMARY: The 5th installment in the Mega Man NES series tries to do what MM 4 did: Keep the same tried-and-true formula in place for gameplay but also throw in a few new twists. At first, the game seems to boast a different storyline, much like MM 4, and as you'll notice soon a few new twists have been added that help boost replay value: They added a bit of a puzzle element that rewards those who look around carefully and experiment with the available weapons. Graphics & sound are the same as previous MM games-solid with well-detailed characters and backgrounds. There still are some problems with flicker & slowdown when lots of characters are onscreen or when there are giant explosion-type effects. Controls remain near-perfect, very responsive and it's easy to switch between weapons from the Pause menu. As noted above, Capcom made a few nice changes to the solid gameplay, namely encouraging the player to find well-hidden items in exchange for an additional special powrup as a reward, and even making Protoman appear to be the big enemy...only you'll beat him and find out you have to go after Wily once again. A bit of a bummer when it's all over. Compared to the chore that was MM 4, this one is also a bit easier, almost too easy at times. Even with these shortcomings it's another solid entry in the series and is recommended for MM fans. This game is also available as part of Mega Man Anniversary Collection for next-gen consoles.
