The world's a stage in Mega Man 6, Capcom's sixth installment in the long-running Mega Man action platforming series. Eight robots are showcased at the First Annual Robot Tournament sponsored by the mysterious billionaire, Mr. X. What should have been a friendly competition turns into a sham as Mr. X reprograms the international lineup of robots with the intention of using them to take over the world. Now it's up to Mega Man to brave over eight stages of 2D side-scrolling action to defeat the new threat and uncover the truth behind Mr. X.

While the game plays largely like its predecessors, some stages break off into two pathways just before the player would reach its Robot Master; the boss remains the same, but one pathway leads to a bonus reward in addition the special weapon typically earned from defeating the boss; one of the four letters needed to spell BEAT, Mega Man's helper bird robot who first appeared in MM5. Once all four letters are collected, Mega Man is capable of summoning Beat to aid him in fighting enemies during stages.

While Mega Man 6 continues to feature Robot Master designs contributed by fans, the game is the first in the series to feature winning designs from North America as a result of a contest run by Nintendo Power magazine, specifically Knight Man and Wind Man. Both bosses were featured on the North American box art alongside Mega Man in recognition of the winning entries.
