THE GOOD: Plenty of action for an RPG. Fast-paced gameplay. Lots of different items to use.THE BAD: Equipping items is too complex. Subpar graphics. SUMMARY: When Crystalis made it's way on to the NES, it quickly drew a lot of attention and praise for putting a lot of action into a traditional RPG. It wasn't just the typical "select command and watch" combat, either-it was more traditional action/adventure-style, and fast paced at that. There were also many different weapons & items to pick up, each having a direct effect like a benefit or consequence in certain situations. The graphics aren't that good for an RPG. Although there's no slowdown in the action when lots of characters are onscreen, the overall graphics are rather bland and lacking detail. Sounds are decent-the music could be better, but sound effects are very good-effects that really stand out are the sounds when using or charging up your sword-based attacks, as these are excellent. Controls are a little mixed. While they're quite responsive, it's hard at first to figure out how to properly equip and use items, even though the system is somewhat menu-based, so plan to sped some time learning it. As mentioned before, the gameplay, especially battling, is engaging and intense...a nice change of pace from traditional slow-paced RPGs. It almost makes this feel more like an action title rather than RPG. The battling alone makes this one a good RPG to check out, especially if you're looking for something different or can't stand to sit around watching battles thinking "it would be so much cooler if I could have more control over these". If looks aren't that important to you, then this game fits the bill nicely, and it'll keep you busy for a while. It's also available on Game Boy Color. |
