THE GOOD: Excellent graphics, great assortment of enemies, weapons, and bossesTHE BAD: Possibly a bit too hard for beginners, no real in-game stroyline SUMMARY: Turok: Dinosaur Hunter can be considered to be one of the most successful hits ever on the now-dead Nintendo 64. This game had first-person shooters going crazy, and the legacy still survives today.
In the game, you play the Indian-like Tal'Set, who is on a quest to free a civilization of people from the hands of an evil warlord. In his way stands not just a buncha dinosaurs, but guerrilla warriors, giant insects, alien-like fighters, monsters galore, and enough crazy and creepy stuff to keep you twitching.
But that won't be too much of a problem, cause not only do you possess a will of steel (I hope), but also an extensive array of weapons; everything from the simple bow and knife to the screaming Minigun and the all-powerful Plasmacaster.
While this game packs all the action-punch in the world, it does have just a few flaws. For instance, in my first year of owning the game, I couldn't find my way out of the second level. This leads me to think that the starting difficulty is unevenly-spaced, and should've built up as the character's skill increased.
Secondly, even though you're following the basic plot to rescue a bunch of people, there's no real in-game storyline to keep you interested in the purpose of your quest. Pretty much all that you're doing is finding your way through jungles and catacombs, and battling monsters and dinosaurs just to get to a big guy with a skull-head and a mace (but this guy is HARD!).
Lastly, there's barely any cinematics or voice-acting. Except for the roaring, laughing, and screaming of enemies, you won't be hearing much(except Turok's triumphant "I am Turok!").
But do these things drag the game down? Not neccessarilly, or else I wouldn't have rated it so highly. If you're still into the Nintendo 64, you really shouldn't live without this game. It's definetly worth the buy. |
