THE GOOD:
Actual talking
Blood splatters
Highly addicting first-person shooter mechanics
A decent range of weapons

THE BAD:
Lags..a lot
You need an expansion pack to play this, so there shouldn't be a reason for lag
Wrong shades of colors
In fact, fairly bad graphics, but still good enough to put up
A fair bit more complicated than Goldeneye 007
Musical Score

SUMMARY:
So this is the fabled Perfect Dark I've been hearing about...it has potential, I can tell you all that, but it's missing many things that make a good game (Devil May Cry 3, Dragon Quest 8).

For example, the colors and tones of this game were either overdone, or done in a lazy way. I just got annoyed at the point where I finished the first few missions, and the colors are either blinding my eyes or boring me to death. Okay, maybe not to those extents, but they're close. The colors aren't hurting anyone (except for those who are vulnerable to mild seizures). Actually, they're not too bad...once you get used to them that is. It really gets to the stage where they're annoying you, but by then, you would've either gotten used to them, or you would've smashed your cartridge by now. But I hope you get used to the colors. I have played this for a few years now, and I'm still not cool with the colors and shades, but who cares? At least the character models look alright. Sure, the faces aren't moving and their eyes aren't blinking, but I don't think Rare have developed that great technology in 2000. Rare isn't Square or Konami you know, otherwise, this would turn out like Dirge Of Cerberus did, or like Metal Gear Solid.

Don't worry too much about how average the graphics are, they won't lag.

That last sentence was a lie. It lags a lot! I was in the middle of a few missions, and the game pulled open a slowdown, which counters my reflexes, and sometimes, I die. The slowdowns just screw you up. They are unpredictable, and impossible to take advantage of. In fact, the enemies are using slowdowns to their advantage. And considering that we have an expansion pack, you'd think they would've performed better? Not really, the slowdowns are just less frequent. But they're still frequent.

And don't rely on the music of the game to calm you down when you're pissed off either. The music isn't that great. It's actually just average shopping music. Rare are not kings of music, but could they have chosen better music? We're trying to stop an alien invasion, not shop. We have guns, not trolleys. The heavy metal of 2000 (and before) would've been better. How? You're shooting all of these aliens and humans, yet it's accompanied by this calm music? This may be a "Spy" game, but some music with a bit more "oomph" would've done better. Also, the voices are both weak and repetitive. By weak, I mean it's only done to an extent where you're just listening to it; it's not special. And most of the enemy lines are the same thing. I hear the same line over and over again whenever I approach one. Oh well, at least there's talking and not lines. But who cares? It doesn't appeal too well.

Cheer up. There is still some good to this game. The range of weapons was quite interesting. You either have the futuristic versions of the weapons Rare have created for James Bond, or you have these weird alien guns used to kill the enemies. I like the alien weapons a lot, but the agent weapons aren't half-bad either. Those weapons are simply Bond's guns, but with different names, different firing sound and maybe different powers. The alien guns must've been half of what Bond posessed, as well as some alien technology added to it through the use of strong, hard bullets, coupled off with alien technology. But seriously, when you get an alien weapon, you don't want to let go of it. It's like you want to bring this into Grand Theft Auto and kill everyone with it. Their drawback, though, is the fact that they're too cool for this world.

That, and the game does get addicting. If you like First Person Shooting mechanics but more complicated, you'll be able to ignore the bad graphics and focus on kicking ass with some weapons.

But what use do the weapons have, if the enemies are just weak little kittens (strength-wise)? In all three difficulties, I found myself killing them either with the most average agent gun, or my Falcons. Your main agent weapon, the Falcon, is similar to Bond's PP7. Except that Bond's PP7 was at the correct strength and Joanna's Falcons are buffed to the extreme and the enemies have next to no armor whatsoever. You could headshot an enemy with the Falcons and they're dead. Sure, it might take a couple of shots, but they're still easily killed. The alien guns would annihilate them, especially if you're giving the enemies a headshot with them. Just remember, if you die, it's either because you're in the wrong place and the enemies are giving you a lot of headshots, or they're being the cheap bastards they usually are and just gang up and headshot you to death. They're cheap, but also easy. The enemies with rocket launches, on the other hand, are hard. You need to dodge rockets, which is hard. However, after barely dodging them, you can simply get out an automatic and shoot them silly. They're still weak.

By the way, there's hardly any story within this game. First Person Shooters need to be based on something. Oh, right, alien invasion. What happens? Okay, gotta go to Area 51. First, must go through the streets, learn of it, and find those mofo's. That's not much of a story. It may be a story, but it's not much to be honest. If you're not into stories, that's sweet, but if you are, then this isn't much of a game for you. Still check it out, and realise that this contains rarely any story. Not many backstories either. Oh well, they're mostly useless anyway.

A boring, slightly overated game, released before it's extremely bad prequel.

Breakdown:

Gameplay: 3
Highly addictive, but it's also quite easy. On the hardest difficulty, though, you'll need to hide more often or use automatics more often. Also, many of the things will activate whenever you press B. You switch weapons, you aim, you crouch and you shoot. Moving around is fairly easy since you can also strafe. I love strafing. It always helps me when I hide, dodge and shoot. It helped me so much here, but helps so much more on Goldeneye 007.

Controls: 4
Lacks a jump button. But they're actually not too bad. More could be done.

Story: 1
lol What story?

Oh yeah, the alien invasion. Right, heading for Area 51 to kick some ass.

Yeah, there's your story! Long story short: It sucks! I learned of an alien invasion and I need to kill them all, but I don't need these by-standers standing in my way, wasting my alien killing time! The world needs saving. Get out of my way!

Graphics: 2
Meh.... Just bad shades of color and average character models. You get an expansion pack, but this thing is lagging here. Maybe Rare's servers couldn't take the graphics. Oh well, they're still not too great.

Sound: 2
Covered in the review. I ripped its sheets apart and you can plainly see why I don't like it much. The music reminds me of a Sunday drive when I'm killing aliens, guards and shit. Wow, that's nice. The talking got lame, and I think the sounds are ringing like hell in my ears.

Lifespan: 3
Beat the game in 3 different dificulties, experiment, what is there to do? Oh well, it's addicting I suppose. This took me about 30 hours altogether, but trust me, it's because I got lost so often in the later levels.

Funfactor: 2
Do you know how addicting this can get to a fanatic of FPS games? Do you know how much it increases when they don't care about storylines? This isn't aggrovating in the way that you're not able to finish a game, but more in the way of "what is this". However, it's addicting! However, the constant "where am I now" comments will end up making this less fun (if you do end up getting lost). Also, the constant shoot, hide, rinse lather repeat strategy is all you can really do and it makes the game a bit too easy by my standards.

Bottom Line:

Perfect Dark feels a tad bit too overated. It's not that great, trust me. It bored me half to death. But I'm more of an RPG person so you might want to expect that. If you're a fan of FPS games with barely any story contained, it might be a nice change from the newer FPS games.

By the way, if you want to know what happens beforehand, grab an Xbox 360 and get a copy of Perfect Dark Zero. The original is still better, however, this is the original, and it only deserves a 2.4/5.0.

PDZ still sucks more though, this is just average.

N64  Best Shooter for the N64! 4.9

THE GOOD:
This game has a HUGE variety of weapons you can use. Everything from your standard pistol guns and submachine rifles, to alien sharpshooters and deadly maulers. In addition, there's also, TONS of levels you can fight on for multiplayer. All well designed! The missions are also awesome. Great storyline.

THE BAD:
Graphics are a little substandard, even for an N64 game. Colors just aren't the right shade. The control is a little weak. Also, kind of a poor replay value.

SUMMARY:
Overall, this is a must buy! This is definitely the best shooter for the N64, maybe even the best overall game for the system! If you like freaky cool weapons, like neutron bombs and guns that can shoot through walls, you absolutely MUST have this game! Also, I don't know how much this game costs, but probably in excess of $25. It is a VERY good game that all N64 owners should have!

N64  Almost Perfect 4.7

THE GOOD:
Loads of missions with 3 difficulty levels, it will be a long time before you complete this
Unlockable cheats which are fun to use and a challenge to unlock
There's endless fun to be had in the combat simulator
There's a training mode to ease you in gently
First game on the N64 to feature a full voice script
Graphics are excellent for the time it was released
A BIG variety of weapons, some of them are very fun to use
Lots of gadgets
Intelligent enemies

THE BAD:
You will need an expansion pack to make this game worthwhile
Game suffers from slowdown occasionally, like when there are 4 human players and 8 simulants in the combat simulator with explosions going off

SUMMARY:
This is one brilliant game. 5 years on and I'm STILL playing it. There is endless fun to be had. There are lot's of missions with 3 difficulty levels, the highest one is very hard. The missions are set in a variety of different places. From the futuristic streets of Chicago to an Alien base, to Area 51. These places all have their own unique different terrains, enemies and weapions to be found. There are also vehicles which can be used. There are also bonus missions to be unlocked.
You will be rewarded for your efforts in the missions if you complete them on certain difficulty levels within a certain time. There are cheats which can be unlocked such as Invincibility, Invisibility, many different weapons cheats, enemies have rocket launchers and many more fun cheats.
These cheats can be used in single player and multiplayer but they can only be used on missions which you have already completed and they cannot be used to obtain new cheats so you can't cheat your way through the game, which is a good thing.
There is also a co-operative mode, where you and a friend can battle it out together through any mission which you have already completed in the single player mode. It brings a very cool dimension to the gameplay.

The combat simulator is excellent. You can choose to fight alone or with up to 3 friends against up to 8 computer controlled bots, which you can choose the appearance of, difficulty and personality.
There is the ridiculously easy and stupid meat sim, then there are easy sims, normal sims, hard sims and the frankly terrifying perfect sims. There is also a Dark sim which can be unlocked, it can do things which humans cannot.
Each of these sims can be customised in the way they look and the way they act. You can choose to have a Venge sim, which will always get it's revenge, a Kaze sim which will stop at nothing to eliminate it's target, a judge sime which will never attack from behind and will always try to attack the leader. There are many others but I won't go on forever.
You can choose any 6 weapons to appear in the level and there are a variety of game types, there is combat, king of the hill, capture the case and many others. You can also choose the teams, you can fight with or against the bots or you could have 4 bots on your team against another human with 4 bots on his/her team. You can order your bots around, tell them to stay in one place, follow you aroud or tell them who to attack. The combat simulator is truly excellent and is one of the things that will just keep you coming back for more.

There are only a few bad points which I have already covered in the bad section, the slowdown is not that noticable and it is very rare. It only occurs when there is A LOT happening like 4 humans and 8 bots in the combat simulator all firing rockets, it almost never happens in the single player missions. IT can be forgiven as the N64 is an old machine and cannot cope with some of the strains that Perfect Dark puts on it.
DO NOT buy this game if you do not have an expansion pack or if it does not come with an expansion pack. You really will not get much out of it.

And finally, to conclude, Excellent game.

To be honest, I've been waiting for this game since I heard about it long ago. I mean, a pumped up ''sequel'' to Goldeneye? DROOL.

Now that it's finally released, I can't help but notice that the magic just doesn't seem to be there. After playing much superior shooters like Half-Life and Unreal Tournament, Perfect Dark's Deathmatch really doesn't hold much interest for me.

The game's one-player mode proved to be quite fun however, as all the tense mission-completing mania that was in Goldeneye is retained, but I suffered extreme bouts of boredom and frustration throughout. Some of the missions were outright boring, consisting mostly of 'go here, get this, then go here.' I think games have progressed a bit past 'fetch' you know? Also, the enemies die WAY too easy on all difficulty levels. You should have no reason to fear a group of enemies rushing you as long as you have one of the game's many fully automatics and a couple clips of ammo. *tatatat*, and you're done.

My biggest beef comes with the game's framerate. The game is a bit choppy to begin with if you use high-res, and it only proceeds to get worse with the more players you add.

2-player is bearable. 3-4 player? Ugh. With simulants? Forget it. The game becomes almost totally unplayable with 4 players plus any number of simulants.

I realize that the N64 is far from a powerful PC, but I've seen MUCH better. I don't remember Goldeneye's 4 player mode being this bad.

Even with the annoyances, I can still recommend Perfect Dark to any shooter fan, because what it lacks in muliplayer playability, it makes up for in fun. You just have to look for it, that's all.

Graphics: 9/10

+ Very impressive, especially in high-res, ignoring the occasional choppys.

- On any of the multiplayer modes. Eyestrain ahoy. The N64 needs a link-cable badly.

Music/FX: 7:10

+ Some rather enjoyable tunes, screams, neat gun sounds...

- Some rather crappy tunes exist as well, and some fo the guard's screams are just stupid sounding and jarring. ''WHY..ME...''

Gameplay: 7/10

+ Overall, the First-player mode is fun, and some enjoyment can be found in the multiplayer modes if set up correctly.

- The game becomes steadily more unplayable the more people and bots you add. Deathmatch has definately been done better. Also, there're some rather annoying levels in the first-player mode.

Replay Value: 8/10

+ I can imagine coming back to this for the amusing cheats and guard-slaughtering.

- This just lacks the staying power Goldeneye had for some reason (maybe I'm just old?).

Innovation: 4/10

+ Some neat weapons, and a rather flexable deathmatch.

- The FPS genre is older than some the people who come to this site. ''It's just like Doom, but...''

N64  Almost Perfect, but comes up just short 4.5

THE GOOD:
Excellent graphics & sound. Fast-paced action. Almost endless multiplayer customization. Realistic gameplay-when you're punched, you'll be dizzy for a while!

THE BAD:
You must have an N64 Expansion Pak to even access some play modes. High difficulty level, even on easy skill levels.

SUMMARY:
Rare's sequel to Goldeneye was one of those N64 games that seemed like it would defy expectations. It certainly looks good enough to-much attention was paid to detail in the graphics, down to details in the character's faces & outfits, as well as bullet holes that stick around after you've shot a weapon. Sounds are excellent as well, and there's a lot of spoken dialogue both in game and cutscenes-it's funny when you shoot someone and they're like "Geez!", of when dying they'll be like "Why...Me?" It's also realistic-when you get punched a few times your vision appears blurry like it would in real-life!
As good as single player is, multiplayer's where it shines. As you unlock characters, weapons, and arenas, you'll have almost infinite possibilities for gameplay options. Plus players can make their own character and save it to Controller Pak!
There are only 2 complaints-if you don't have an Expansion Pak, forget the Solo Missions. Also, although there are 3 difficulty levels, some of the objectives are rather difficult to accomplish on easy skill levels, so be prepared for some frustration. Contorls are good but it does take some time to learn the weapon-switching system.
Overall this is an awesome game, but be sure to invest in an Expansion Pak if you don't have one already. Otherwise you'll be unable to get the full value out of this title.

N64  Perfect Dark is, well...almost perfect! 4.9

THE GOOD:
1.AMAZING weaponry. Each and every gun or gadget has a secondary function which adds a huge amount of fun, especially in multiplayer mode. (Not to mention being able to hold and fire 2 pistols or submachine guns at the same time.)
2.AWESOME environments. Level designs are very detailed(not to mention cool) and often HUGE.
3.GREAT storyline. I thought the storline was extremely good. When Mr. Blonde's true nature was revealed I was like "gasp" THUD!
4."PERFECT" cheats and secrets. Invincibilty, cloaking device, infinite ammo, no reloads, enemy rockets, the list goes on and on.
5.SUPERB co-op/counter-op. THis mode is for those who could use some back up in the single player missions. You and a friend can play as a team or, even better, as enemies in the story mode. THe game even includes computerized buddies for those who don't have friends who live nearby.
6.ASTONISHINGLY GOOD graphics(for a 64.)
7.EXTRA challenges. So you've beaten the game on all three difficulty levels and you want more? also included in the game are 30 custumized challenges for you to beat. Also, Perfect Dark doesn't just give you the cheats, YOU have to earn them by beating certain levels on certain difficulties within a certain amount of time.
8.FANTASTIC mutiplayer mode. A huge variety of variables. You can pick from a range of terrifying weaponry, engaging gametypes, inspiring soundtracks, and and fabulous maps. Up to 4 people and 9 simulants. Even if you don't have any siblings or friends, you can still battle against a range of simulants of different difficulty levels and with different personalities and fighting styles.

THE BAD:
Perfect Dark uses some of the best graphics that were available at the time it came out. Although they may not seem like much today, these were top of the line when PD was produced. because of this, you Must have an expansion pack to play the entire game. Only about 25% of the game is available without an expansion pack. Also, when you have 5 or more players(human or simulant) in a multiplyer match, gameplay can get a little choppy in large areas, especially when explosives are used.

SUMMARY:
If you have a 64, BUY THIS GAME! It is, in my opinion, THE best shooter for the system and tied with SSB for the best 64 game overall. As long as you have an expansion pack and your system is in tolerable shape, YOU WILL HAVE A BLAST WITH THIS GAME! Even without the story mode, the replay value on the multiplayer is enormous! If you buy nothing else for your 64, make sure to get this game!

N64  Best Game 5.0

THE GOOD:
This is by far the best game ever! Best thing about it is that it's multiplayer is the best ever! Even if you don't have friends with you, you can kill sims! Also when you put in the dark sims...It is intense to say the least!

THE BAD:
One mission you save a talking laptop

SUMMARY:
This game is the best FPS ever made. It has a nice 1 player, but the best part of the game is the multiplayer! You can even have you own profile in the multiplayer that tells how good you are. For people who don't have friends it is awsome! You can add sims (Up to 8) for you to kill. You can adjust their skill level, and you can customise them like you can your caractor! Awsome Awsome! A Must have game. You can get it for cheap now, so go out and buy it! It is truly worth your money

THE GOOD:
-Great Weapons
-Great Arena's
-Great Longativity
-Great Multiplayer!!!
-Great Storyline
-Great Missions
-Great Difficulty
-Cool Unlockable Things
-And Much More...

THE BAD:
It may get frustrating when you move up a difficulty and find that you can't win and you keep getting sniped in the head and dieing. You may never actually fully complete this game.

SUMMARY:
This has got to be one of my top 3 favorite games. Even years after its release, its still so fun and amazing. The multiplayer alone could be its own game. The storyline has got to be one of the best I have been privalaged to see. The difficulties are great. The weapons are so cool. The arena's are wicked. What else can I say? If you don't own this game and you have an N64, get it now fool! If you don't have an N64, get the game anyway. Its just that good.

N64  Perfect Dark in my View 4.4

THE GOOD:
The weapons were absolutely fantastic.
The missions were pretty damn good as well.
The AI of the bots in multiplayer was exceptional.

THE BAD:
No bad to really speak of.

SUMMARY:
The storyline was really good in my opinion. The gameplay was really good. This is an excellent game, if you can get it you need it now.

The multiplayer can have up to 16 bots playing and if you have 4 people to play you can have 20 players at once. You can change the bots personalities but not just skill but speed and what they do the most. One is peace bot who will disarm you and then run off with your gun. There is speed bod who runs really fast adn its hard to shoot him. The levels for multiplayer are also really good.

If you have the expansion pack then you can actualy play the main misisons, which has a sort of complicated story line but not that bad.

Also you can do VR training and there is a shooting range that you can practice yoyur aim or gun skills.

Overall this is a very good game that I highly recommend.

N64  Best Shooting game for N64 ever!!!!! 5.0

by coolflame
from -------, FL, United States
Aug 1, 2003
THE GOOD:
Music
Speed
Lots of Arena's
Lots og Guns
Lots of difficulties for the sims
Can play up to 4 players and 8 sims
You can play up to 400 Team points or 200 individual points.
Graphics
Lots of characters.
You can play 2 player one player. (Co-operative)
You can create custom games.
Lots of cheats

THE BAD:
Like Nothing!

SUMMARY:
In the first level its easy but it gets harder as it goes on. The longest level is Skeder Ruins. And its the hardest at the end becaus eof the boss. The Boss has a Slayer (A rocket launcher looking thing that you can stear the missles). While you only have Reapers (A gun that shoots 200 bullets at a time), Maulers (guns that aliens use), and other guns in the game.

During the game you come in contact with aliens, such as elvis who tries to help you during the game. Same with another guy.

Another reason why you should get this game is because you can play co-operative.(Wich is 2 player one player) Thats the easiest way to play it.

Also, you can play three difficulties in the game. Agent, Secret Agent, and Perfect Agent. Wich makes the game real hard.

In Multiplayer you can set up your own custom game with 1-4 human players and 1-8 sim players. The Sims have many difficulties and types. For begginners there are MeatSims, if your familiar with gun games there are EasySims, if your an advanced player you there are NormalSims, if almost very good there are hard sims, if you are an expert there are perfectsims, the most non human sims are the DarkSims. They are cyborgs so they are not the same as humans. They are faster and have the difficulty of a perfect/hardsim. Also you can change the sims character to something. There are many types of sims that you will haft to find out when you buy the game.

The only things you need to have is an expansion pack. (And of course all the needed stuff for regular games. This game usauly costs around $9.99

Hope you enjoy the game!
