GoldenEye 007. | 3.0 0 comments |
by Kiker from , , Australia | May 5, 2005 |
THE GOOD: Guns. Some of the levels are medium. Explosions. Last 2 levels don't involve just completing the level before it, the 1st secret requires Cradle to be completed in Secret Agent and for Egypt you need to complete Aztec in 00 Agent.THE BAD: Graphics aren't that good these days. Some levels are too easy. Some levels are too hard. Train on 00 Agent is IMPOSSIBLE. SUMMARY: Lastability: 7/10. God, 25 levels played 3 times looks quick and easy but, God, some of them levels are so freaking hard. Graphics: 4/10. Icky. I can't go looking at flashes from guns. The other 007 games don't have that but this game is not good for graphics. Sound: 6/10. Quite repetitive, like the guns and the people getting shot. Gameplay: 7/10. I know. Shoot the shit outta every bad guy, save the good guys and finish the missions. Overall: 3.6/5.0. Could use better sound and graphics. |

THE GOOD: Almost everythingTHE BAD: Lack of realism Graphics (scan Brosnan's face!) SUMMARY: Once upon a time, there was a man named Bond, James Bond. He was owned by an old company named Parker Brothers, an evil little company. He exposed the evil of the company, and was then bought by Rareware, which was the greatest company alive at that time. Then, he was bought by EA, which made only one good Bond game, Nightfire (which I suggest you get (for the PS2)). But enough about Bond's life, let's talk about Rare's lil' creation, GoldenEye.
Graphics 6/10 The first time you play this game, it may not look good. Bond's face looks like it was molded and thrown into a shredder, and glued back on upside-down. But once you get used to it, you won't really care.
Story 9/10 The story is hard to comprehend, but in the fourth level, it comes together. A military satellite, GoldenEye has been stolen by a crime syndicate named Janus. You have to go blah blah blah and recover the satellite.
Gameplay 9/10 The gameplay is really good. I mean it was almost perfect, if it wasn't for the lack of realism. I mean, come on! On the last level, I was getting shot at by some guy 20 miles away with a pistol! Oh well, screw that. Bond moves pretty good, he doesn't move like a sumo trying to run 20 miles. The game's Multiplayer is crisp too.
Replay Value 10/10 If you beat it once, you unlock some cheats. It's fun beating it on higher difficulties and unlocking levels like an Aztec palace or an Egyptian pyramid. It's also fun seeing how fast you can beat a level.
Overall 4/5 (or 9/10) It would of been a perfect score, if it wasn't for the graphics and the lack of realism.
Scores: Graphics: 6/10 Story: 9/10 Gameplay: 9/10 Replay Value: 10/10 Overall: 9/10 |

Great game, great multiplayer | 4.5 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Excellent multiplayer Great story Good levels Excellent graphics [for its time] Many weapons Many characters [and some (surprise!) secret ones too]THE BAD: Only four players, but this is just nitpicking. There wouldn't be a way to have more than four on an N64 Minor glitches SUMMARY: This is a game that I have played and beaten over and over again. I remember doing 4 player matches with grenade launchers only on Stack in Multiplayer. I remember this being one of the best multiplayer games ever. The single player is great; plot twists, thrills, frantic encounters and a great story await you! Also, if you beat the game on the 00 Agent difficulty level you unlock the 007 mode, which basically allows you to customize the game to your preferences. You can give enemies 100% accuracy but 0 life or millions of other of combinations. It's the holiday season, find this in the bargain bin and play it! |

THE GOOD: It's 007! The weaponry is very well done, the graphics for this game were good, the audio is pretty good, story line is well built, the difficulty is a good mix of easy and hard and the maps are well built.THE BAD: Not too much exept for some cliping(when a object visually passes another...) (man I feel like such a nerd)(nerdy laugh here). SUMMARY: Well I know youre playing youre Halo2's and youre GTA San Andreas's but since that new Golden Eye game is coming out I might as well get you in the mood for Bond..James Bond. For it's time this game was very good. The graphics were there and so was the audio and the maps were well deseigned. There are some cliping(go to the bad for a full definition) but either than that it's really good. So play it already!(Sheeeeesssh!)

Of all the games I've played over the years, on all different kinds of systems, from the NES to the PS2, no game has left me with fonder memories than Rareware's first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64.
GAMEPLAY: 10/10 ----------------- Single-Player Mode
I've got a lot of ground to cover in this section, so I'll start off with the single-player mode. There are 18 regular missions, roughly following the plot of the James Bond movie the game is based off of, with three different difficulty modes (Agent, Secret Agent, 00 Agent) for each level. The Agent missions (the easiest difficulty) are naturally pretty simple; the AI reacts slowly to your presence, the objectives may be as simple as not killing any civilians or scientists as you traverse the stage from Point A to Point B, and it usually takes only one to two hits to kill an enemy (assuming you hit them in the chest or head; hitting them in the leg will merely disable them for a few seconds before they resume firing at you). However, from there, things get a bit harder. Secret Agent, while still manageable for new players, is a big step up from the Agent mode; the objectives become much more complicated than hitting a button near a computer, and the enemy soldiers are much more alert to your presence. Also, you'll find subtle changes made to each level that make your mission a much tougher one; security cameras will appear in the most crucial areas of the stage that, if they see you, will sound an alarm that will bring in soldier after soldier after soldier after soldier... which usually results in either an aborted mission or a dead James Bond on your screen. Once you beat a Secret Agent mission, a 00 Agent mission will open up; these are the hardest missions in the entire game (not counting the hidden 007 mode, of course), and will require full knowledge of every aspect of both the mission stages and the game mechanics for you to beat them. This may all sound pretty tedious when reading about it, but believe me, once you pick up the controller and start playing, you won't want to put it down.
Multiplayer Mode
While the single-player mode is well thought-out and it alone would make this game a 10/10, Rareware went one step further and included what is in my opinion the greatest multiplayer experience in any console game, ever. Even after seven years, it still manages to rival that of Counter-Strike for the PC. While it's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes it so amazing, I'm pretty sure it includes at least one of these three things: a) level design, b) weapons, c) the different game modes. The level design, for starters, is roughly the same type of design found in the single-player missions, except they've been reduced in size and given a more fitting layout for 2+ players to battle in. The weapons, which are the same here as in SP missions, are just plain fun to play with; you can set the game up so that the only weapons you can pick up are pistols, or automatics, or laser guns, or proximity mines (a personal favorite of mine), or even "Slappers Only" (nothing is more fun than frantically karate-chopping your friends to death).
Also, you can choose to play from a number of different modes, which include Licensed to Kill (one shot is all it takes to kill your opponent), Flag Tag (a bastardized version of Capture the Flag), and The Man With the Golden Gun (only one Golden Gun in the level, and the character who has it can kill anyone with one shot). Up to four players can play these missions, and while the framerate may suffer a bit because of it, it doesn't hamper the playability of the game whatsoever. I've had some of my all time top gaming moments playing four-player mode with my step-brothers and friends that no other game can ever recreate.
CONTROLS: 9.5/10 ----------------- First and foremost, is the Z trigger. Once again, we're reminded of how brilliant the people over at Nintendo are when it comes to controller design; there were the shoulder buttons for the SNES, and now the trigger button for the N64, which is used in GoldenEye to fire your weapon. Since your left index finger is always resting on the trigger while playing, shooting your gun becomes second nature, something that's vitally important in a first-person shooter. Although you can't jump in GoldenEye, there's no real need to, as there are ladders or stairs at nearly every wall or ledge. The C< and C> buttons are probably the most important buttons to your survival (other than Z); they allow you to strafe left and right, swiftly dodging any enemy you may need to avoid. B both opens doors and reloads your weapon, and might I say this game does a really quick and effective way of reloading; it may not be incredibly realistic to take less than a second to reload an 80-bullet magazine, but it contributes a great deal to GoldenEye's fast-paced nature.
And these are only the standard controls; there are three other totally different control settings you can use, one of them involving not one but TWO N64 controllers.
GRAPHICS: 8/10 ----------------- Okay, okay, you've gotta cut GoldenEye some slack; for a game that came out over seven years, the graphics aren't all that bad. Sure, the environments are pretty blocky, and the characters' faces look stretched out (particularly Natalya's... yuck), but back in 1997 they were pretty revolutionary. And even by today's standards, they're not horrendous or anything. Besides, GoldenEye's not really about the graphics, it's about the gameplay, which it has in spades.
SOUND: 10/10 ----------------- Unlike the graphics, the sound effects and music are as good as anything you'll hear in a video game today. Every gun makes its own distinct sound when fired, and if you put me up to it, I could probably tell which gun was which just by playing the sound of it firing. Every sound in this game is perfected to a tee, whether it be opening a door, breaking glass, or the groan of a guard you just shot.
As for the soundtrack, well, it blends in perfectly with the atmosphere of the game, especially the single-player missions. Rare didn't just throw together one or two bland James Bond-esque songs and reuse them for every single level; there's a song for the Dam mission, a song for the Depot mission, for the Train mission, etc. One thing I loved about the music that isn't really a big deal, but goes to show the time and effort Rare put into the soundtrack, is the corny, lite-jazz music that plays whenever you're in an elevator. You'll have to hear it yourself to truly appreciate it, but as I said it's just one of many subtle moments in GoldenEye that contributes to the quality of the game as a whole.
REPLAY VALUE: 10/10 ----------------- If the several difficulty modes in the single-player mode don't have enough replay value to last you several dozen years (and, trust me, they do), there's also the glorious Cheat menu. Simply put, certain missions under certain difficulty modes have an optional time limit built into them. If you beat those missions under their respective times, a cheat (ranging from Paintball Mode to Invisibility) will unlock in the cheat menu. The best part is, you can't use those cheats on any missions except ones you've beaten. As someone who despises cheat codes of any kind, this is one of the best ideas I've ever come across in a video game. Not only do you have to work for your rewards, but you can't use said rewards to cheat for you.
Add the multiplayer mode to the mix, and you've got yourself a game that will keep you entertained infinitely longer than you'll ever want to spend on an FPS, but the sheer addictiveness of it all will keep pulling you back in years after you finish playing.
And I haven't even mentioned anything about the bonus missions...
FINAL THOUGHTS -----------------
Countless games since 1997 have tried to duplicate GoldenEye, including the Electronic Arts Bond games (which, by the way, are disasters); and while a few have succeeded technically, they've never been able to match the feel of GoldenEye. Why this is, I can't say. I guess it's just one of those cases where everything came together and fell into place at exactly the right time. No FPS will ever top this masterpiece in my book.
GAMEPLAY: 10/10 CONTROLS: 9.5/10 GRAPHICS: 8/10 SOUND: 10/10 REPLAY VALUE: 10/10 REVIEWER'S TILT: 10/10
FINAL SCORE (AVERAGE): 9.58/10

GoldenEye 007 | 3.0 0 comments |
by Nikolai Diavolo from London, , England | Apr 11, 2004 |
THE GOOD: Revolutionised the first-person shooter format. Presented James Bond to a new generation of younger fans. Superb mission design and layout. Well-paced. The first major James Bond release that started the tidal wave of success for 007 games. The multiplayer deathmatches.THE BAD: Graphics. Failed to stick to the film's story. Unlicenced weapons. Filled with references to past Bond films that did not integrate well with the action. Overrated and the "GoldenEye Myth". SUMMARY: "GoldenEye 007".
One just has to utter the title of Rareware's 1996 Nintendo64 smash-hit blockbuster extravaganza and everyone knows what one is talking about. Gamers the world over recognise the name, recognise the number and recognise the overhyped "GoldenEye Myth" that now overhangs each and every Bond game created by Electronic Arts. And I for one am sick of it.
I am probably one of the biggest Bond fans ever, and I love gaming and playing quality titles from start to finish. And although the tidal wave of "GoldenEye 007" enthusiasm and euphoria caught me for a few years after the release, the entire experience has left a bitter taste in my mouth. Sure, "GoldenEye 007" is a wonderful game. Sure, Bond helped revolutionise gaming for the better. But the shadow of "GoldenEye 007" has hung for too long over games consoles.
Reading through reviews of recent Bond titles such as "NightFire" and "Everything or Nothing", journalists harp on about how the games are good but can never hope to topple "GoldenEye 007" from the top spot. It is my opinion that EA's take on the Bond licence has not only matched but far surpassed Rareware's 1996 title. Because, at the end of the day, all "GoldenEye 007" is is a basic, straightfoward first-person shooter with no frills attached. Bond is all about variety, spectacular methods of completing the mission and multiple routes. EA have captured this spirit and therefore captured the essence of James Bond. "GoldenEye 007" did not.
Bond is not Rambo. Bond does not run through corridors and gun down guards as they pour from multiple doorways and rooms. He may do for a brief moment before his breathtaking escape, but not for mission after mission after mission after mission. He uses vehicles, he leaps from ledges and swings to safety, he entertains hand-to-hand combat and he only carries one weapon at a time. "GoldenEye 007" was far too limited and far too simplistic to show what James Bond can do, whereas "Everything or Nothing" is perfect to showcase the talents of 007.
The problem is, everyone remembers "GoldenEye 007" and therefore thinks that if Bond is not gunning down terrorists like Rambo then he is not being Bond. The game was amazing back in 1996, and as I have stated revolutionised the gaming environment. However, when compared to the character and the multiple games that have followed, "GoldenEye 007" fails to meet the expectations of legions of Bond fans. If released for the first time today, people would shun it and cry out for another "Agent Under Fire" from EA.
Having said that, take a look at my Good column. This game has a lot going for it and hence is worth playing until completion. The thing that annoys me is the constant references to "GoldenEye 007" as the best ever James Bond 007 interactive game. Sure, it's good, but it's not Bond. It's a floating hand holding a gun with a licence to kill bolted onto the side listening to the James Bond Theme being fed through a supermarket muzak machine. In today's modern world, where the latest films under Pierce Brosnan have tried and succeeded in showing the multiple sides of Bond, something akin to "Everything or Nothing" is the true Bond experience... not this outdated and simplistic first-person shooter.
"Closing time, James. Last call." |

THE GOOD: 1. Lots of characters 2. Fully challenging 3. The introduction has four new characters when Aztec and Egyptian are cleared 4. Level 20 is awesome, actually more than some awe, it's full of awe! 5. When all 23 cheats are unlocked, you'll probably be playing the game for 6 more months! 6. Multiplayer mode 7. Large arsenal, variety of weapons 8. More violent reactions and entertainments than the TWINE 64 game 9. 007 mode featured when all 20 levels are beat on 00 Agent, can set enemy status! 10. Four files 11. With 007 mode and all this, this is like the only game with such features, they make you feel like you can reprogram the game your way 12. Good music 13. Has that 'all so special killer spy' feeling that TWINE doesn't have 14. The button activated code, known as Line Mode (no color, just white and some lines), is sweet! 15. Lots of gadgets/equipment 16. The graphics are fairly good 17. In the Runaway or the Streets levels, there's this tank that makes even soldiers cry in pain when crushed, Osama would even feel sorry! 18. Get to be invincible...in a level not cleared (secet)! 19. Rocket and Grenade Launchers included! 20. Around 75 weaponsTHE BAD: 1. Text only, no voices (don't worry, that's actually common) 2. Small possibility of frustration with clearing a level SUMMARY: If you like weapons of explosive and major destruction, you'll play this game over and over again even after clearing it until you begin to feel sick, and possibly further, and you won't regret it. When you play the game (helps if it's near your bedtime and you are in Covert or Infiltration levels like level 2), you'll get this sneaky feeling, this great feeling about having objectives, you may understand.
It takes three things to get yourself to think that this game is perfect: 'Self' imagination, a player who sneaks up and infiltrates, and a master player. If you have even one of these, or something I forgot, you'll like it. You're gonna like this job! |

Goldeneye=The best game ever made | 5.0 0 comments |
by duggy_98 from Guelph, Ontario, | Jan 2, 2004 |
THE GOOD: The missions, the multiplayer mode, the music.........THE BAD: The graphics (i really hope there would be a remake of this game) SUMMARY: As today, we might think Goldeneye is old but i am really surprised that there's so much people talking in the goldeneye forum. I think the reason why Goldeneye is still popular today is because of everything. The game is composed of an original game-play story, of outstanding missions, the unbeatable multiplayer mode. (no other game can compare to Goldeneye's multi mode. And last of all, the music. I like the way each level has their own music and I think that's what made the game so interesting. Putting all those ingredients together makes the best game ever made. This game is outstanding and i give it a 5 out of 5. Good job Rare!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

THE GOOD: Weapons. All around gameplay is awesome. How the game has built in memory pack thingy.THE BAD: Some missions are pretty hard but if you stick with it its not that bad. Graphics are not the best but it is an old game. SUMMARY: The story line isnt the best in the world but what can you expect for one of the first FPS. The missions are extrermely fun. How is shooting everything that come in your path not fun? The multiplayer is prety good, getting to kill your friends for hours at a time. That will never get old.
This is on my favorite 25 games list and wil probably never leave it unless there are several new gta games.
I have to say that I highly reccomend this game to pretty much anyone with a N64 that is old enough to hanlde constant violence, but in this day and age that is li 7. |
