“The most interesting scene in the movie... is boring as a game”

THE GOOD:
Looks and sounds good...

THE BAD:
...though the music is only there during the final lap; other than that, the constant roar of the pod racer's engine drones on, which is sleep inducing... as is the gameplay for the most part.

SUMMARY:
Released in 1999 by Lucas Arts, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer is based off of the race scene in the movie, The Phantom Menance. Loads of people were rather impressed by that scene, so it makes sense to make a game based off of it. Sadly, all this game made me want to do was play F-Zero. F-Zero was exhilerating and to the point; Racer dragged on and on with boring designs, only sometimes throwing a curveball or two.

The idea is to go through the Tournament mode, which means coming first in all three main circuits, plus the invitational circuit. The main circuits consist of seven tracks while the invitational one has just four. If you get tired of that mode, you...

“From the big screen to your screen”

THE GOOD:
Perfectly recreates the Podracing sequence from Episode 1. Excellent graphics & sound. Lots of tracks & racers to unlock. Multiplayer for 2 players.

THE BAD:
Nothing.

SUMMARY:
Hot on the heels of the Episode 1 movie, this game gives you the chance to be Anakin Skywalker, Sebulba, or one of many other podracers and take a few hot laps around the movie's track in the Boonta Classic.
First thing SW fans will notice is the excellent attention to detail, a signature feature of LucasArts titles. The tracks and machines look just like in the movie! You can even visit Watto's shop to upgrade your racer. This game is also extremely fast-Podracers can easily reach over 1000 MPH in a few seconds. Sound-wise, the effects are perfectly recreated and you'll also hear John Williams' soundtrack in the background; additionally you'll be able to taunt other racers in their native languages, which is fun to do as well....

“Best Racer On N64”

The game starts right out playing. There is really no mention of any of the movie, and no real storyline. And that's the way it should be.

Graphics: Even for N64 these graphcis are pretty good, but it is difficult to get a good look at them going 600+mp (or whatever unit of measure they are using).

Sound: Not much else to hear in this game except for the whine of the different racers. There are little snippets that the parts store owner says.

Gamplay: Very straightforward: Race, win, get money, upgrade, race, etc.

Level Design: Plat and pointy like all N64 levels. There are little shortcuts that you can take that may get you to the finishline faster than normally. They would be near impossible to spot if not for your map which shows the paths.

Cheats: None, or they are extremely complicated to use. Probably not worth using anyway.

Overall: Although the lack of cheats is a big letdown the rest of the game is great.

“The short racer”

THE GOOD:
Pod racers look cool
The number of tracks
The number of characters

THE BAD:
The game was too short
Some of the levels could have been better designed
The pods should have had a wider variety of specs

SUMMARY:
I had fun with this racer even though it was for a little while. I liked being able to buy parts new or used, and I liked the pit droids and how damage affects your racing. The turbo with limits is also another nice additions since you have to time it and try not to overheat your engines. I liked the nice selection of characters there were, and I also like some of the tracks. The game was too short though. There is practically no replay value once you beat it.

Bottom Line
Good for a short time. If you are looking for a racer to last you for a long time, look somewhere else.

“Impressive, but fairly soulless racer.”

THE GOOD:
Very fast
Looks superb
Lots of ships and tracks

THE BAD:
Can feel uninteresting and soulless at times
Inferior to F-Zero X

SUMMARY:
Graphics: Great, very detailed and pretty smooth, and moving at a high speed as well. Great-looking game, that's for sure.

Sound: Good sound-effects and the little music that is sounds pretty darn great, but there just isn't enough of it.

Gameplay: Good control, many ships and tracks, long and varied tracks. The downside is lack of real "feel", it doesn't feel that interesting and fresh compared to F-Zero X.

Lifespan: Should last a long while, as long as you doesn't loose interest in it. A decent multiplayer-mode as well.

Overall: One of the better N64 racers, but F-Zero X is better. Still recommended to speed-freaks, though.

- Bad graphics
- Boring
- Yet still boring

SUMMARY:
I never got into this game. I rented it and thought it was fun but that was then. Its so boring and I just can't resist to throw it against the wall and beat it with a sledgehammer. Don't buy it nor rent it or go near it! Ya know what, if you want my game just PM me. I'll sned it to VIP style.

nice SW game

THE BAD:
you get bored very quickly

SUMMARY:
I just wanted to say that you don't have to believe the review that said that racer is en easy game : it its hard ... very hard ...
There are levels which I had to replay over and over and over again just to get that first place.

And that is also the reason why this game gets so quickly bored, there's only one difficulty in it and that is the fact that you have to replay some tracks over and over and over (you get it, don't you) again ...

“worst racing game”

-large selection of drivers and vechicles

THE BAD:
-too easy
-too short
-almost no replay value

SUMMARY:
well this game was, im sorry to say it, crap. it was utter crap IMO. it was way too easy and short. i read some reviews that it would take a month to beat and that it was really hard, well let me tell you 3 days from when i got it is not long. the other drivers are easy to beat and the game is boring. i usually like racing games but this one is terrible. after you beat the races once you feel like not playing them. even if you have friends over and what to race in 2 player mode you will find your self saying this game sucks. because it does.

i reccoment you not wasting your money on a game like this.

“Star Wars Racer”

THE GOOD:
An absolute beuty of a racing game, so fast it might need a government health warning.

THE BAD:
Can be incredibly infuriating, Sebulba, instead of being the best racer, is pretty much the worst (but he does have a flamethrower).

SUMMARY:
How would you use to race? Zip around linear tracks on F1-cars? Become Mario and drive around funny tracks in go-karts? Or would you rather strap yourself in and start caning around amazingly varied courses in Zero-Gravity racing pods? I know what I'd rather do.

Star Wars Racer is an entire game based on one scene from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. And it really is good, believe me. You choose from all the racers from the film (and then some), and go over speeds of 1000 miles per hour. Explosian is almost inevitable. But you get back on track.

“Star Wars:Episode 1 Racer-IT'S OK”

THE GOOD:
Large choice of racers .Many tracks .vehicles are upgradeable .Good graphics and sound .Nice control .Good voices .

THE BAD:
Some tracks are extremely hard .Only moderate replay value .Unlocking characters becomes hard .Many tracks look the same .

SUMMARY:
Overall the game is a good raceing game .The graphics are good .The ground beneith your pod racer moves good and really gives you the feeling of going at fast speeds .The sound is good too .It sounds just like the sound FX in the movie .The drawbacks come from the games hard and repeating tracks .Some tracks are extremely hard so you will have to try many,many times to finally pass them .The tracks also start to look the same after a while .There are a couple of races on each planet but they all look very a like .This is a good game for any raceing game fan with an N64 .
