THE GOOD: WWII battlefield populated with thousands of other soldiers at any given time. Mayhem, trickery and strategy that actually pay off. I get so into this game it's unreal. Something I can't do with most games. I've played all the popular online games and this is the only one that doesn't get boring. It's best to play with a group of people or at least another friend. That way one of you can pull a tank or a truck and drive the other as a soldier and make assaults on cities/bases. To their credit the developers keep make consistent improvements. The game is only going forward not backward. Detail and frame rates continue to rise.
THE BAD: Currenly I have to go to a friend's house to use one of his PCs to play the game as I only have Macs currently. I am dying for the Mac version to come out and unfortunately I missed the last closed beta invitation. As soon as this thing is available in open beta I'm there. If I had the money I would have already bought a PC just to play this game.
SUMMARY: You can pick up a copy of WWII Online in the store now for $10. Granted it's a very old copy and you'll want a high speed connection to download all the updates. On the flip side apparently a new boxed version will be coming out with a large map included and the 1.7 version of the game when it's available. Sounds good. I just look forward to the Mac version.
THE GOOD: The good, well the whole idea of this game is good. Picking from vehicles and planes to fight thousands of people. The graphics are fine considering the size of the map and the gameplay is great, the tanks and planes are better than most tank and plane simulators i have played.
THE BAD: The bad is what ruins this game. While playing online the lag is horrible. You are lucky to get 2 Frames per second. This ruins everything, flying becomes almost impossible and everything else becomes less fun. Also there is alot boring time you spend getting to the battles to sometimes lag and end up dead before you even get to fight.
SUMMARY: The offline mode shows how fun this game could be lag free. But until the problems are fixed, i dont think this game is worth paying the subscription for.
Being an extreamly large WWII buff, I was able to get into this game in no time whatsoever. Basically, you will battle your opponents, which can number well into the dozens upon dozens, in an all out war filled with everything from infantry men to tanks. Yes sir, it is a battle of the strategies when it all comes down to it. Be a good general and you will command the winning team, if not, you will loose much more than your rank...
As the era a online game starts to unfold rapidly in front of our eyes, there will no doubt be many games that just throw a shoddy online feature into their game in hopes that people will buy it. WWII Online is not one of these games, there is a well designed mode of play and a very real to life setting and mood that develups during gameplay. Do to the somewhat akwardness of the keyboard the controls can be a bit hard to learn and even harder to master. But they are by no means bad.
Graphically, WWII Online can hold its own against any of the big guns that you hear about, and do to the lack of intrest in it, WWII Online has much less slowdown than that of a Red Faction or a Tribes 2.
If you are in the market for a good action/strategy game that you can match your skill against those of people all around the net, then WWII Online is just the game that you are looking for.
