THE GOOD: Most everything about it!THE BAD: Frustrating for people like me who suck at video games. SUMMARY: Errr... Well, this game is awesome. It just is. What!? You don't believe me!? Fool. There is nothing wrong with this game. I've just never beat it. I suck at platformers... I like to play as Tails. Yeah, I'd like to sell your soul to get this game. That would be fun. May the darkness take your soul if you don't like this game. Indeed... This game is better than Sonic 1. I can get past the fourth level on this one. Yes, I am well aware of the fact that I'm not good at this sort of video game. Hmmm... I require more characters... Indeed... Quite so... Dang it, who came up with that annoying minimum character thing anyway!? Grrrr... Yah... This game ROCKS!!! Indeed... |

THE GOOD: More moves and different levels New sidekick called Tails New 2-player modeTHE BAD: Is there anything?? SUMMARY: Sonic 2 was the sequel to the outstanding first Sonic game. Released in November 1992 (which was significant for a small part of the game in itself) this game proved to be even more popular than the first. Introducing Sonic’s sidekick Tails, Sonic carried on the fight to stop Dr Robotnik from turning the animals of Mobius into Badniks.
Having a second character enabled a second person to play the main mode at the same time. Although the screen always followed Sonic, who hasn’t got someone to use Tails at the same time? After all, he is indestructible and will always return if he gets lost. If you didn’t have someone else controlling Tails then he will copy Sonic’s moves exactly. Despite the fact Tails flew down to you when he returned from off screen, you were unable to fly him yourself if I remember rightly.
Sonic has a new move at his disposal in this game, called the “Spin Dash.” Pressing down and the jump button would cause Sonic to crouch down and charge up. Releasing the down button will cause Sonic to dash off at high speed in a spin. This move comes in very handy for destroying badniks in a row or just going somewhere quickly. As in the last game you have the TV’s to break which will reveal power ups and the springs.
This time round the levels seem a lot longer and I got nearer the 9 minute 59 second time limit in some of the levels, particularly the Metropolis Zone levels. So this game did take longer for me to complete than the first one. There are still underwater parts to this game, but not a complete zone underwater this time. Tails can also drown, so if you’re feeling cruel you can go underwater and get an air bubble but stop Tails from picking up any. I’m sure most people have had a moment of evilness and done that. The flip side is that if you miss an air bubble while jumping for it, Tails might get it and you’ll be the one who drowns.
The special stage is different this time around. You are in a half pipe and you have to collect a certain number of rings to progress to the next part. By the end if you’ve got enough rings you get a chaos emerald, if you don’t then you fail. You also have to watch out for bombs in the levels. If you hit one of them then you lose 10 rings. Also the method for entering special stages is different. Instead of having to have 50 rings by the end of a level you need to have 50 rings by the time you pass a Star Post. If you do then stars will appear above it and you get warped to the special stage. Also if you die then you will re-spawn at the last Star Post you passed.
Since you can have two people playing this game, Sega decided to include a versus mode where you could play against someone else in various special stages trying to beat them in collecting rings. In the half pipe it’s best to be in front and if you’re behind you can jump to get in front of them. But your opponent will be doing the same thing as well. There is also a sound menu which you can get to without cheat codes this time. But in the menu by playing certain selection numbers you could activate level selects and the ability to place objects on the map. One of the codes ends up being the day this game was unleashed on the world, which I thought was rather neat.
Dr Robotnik has more badniks in the game this time round and some you have to wait to attack before you can hit them. Again, picking up gold rings will stop you from being killed and getting a shield from a TV helps enormously at some points. When you get nearer the end of the game one of the levels takes place aboard an aircraft and the one preceding that has Tails flying a plane below you and you have to jump around killing badniks. Tails always manages to catch you so there’s no need to worry about that, but it’s clear Sega put more thought into the level design this time. The final confrontation with Dr Robotnik takes place aboard his Space Egg where you first have to defeat a metal version of yourself before moving onto Robotnik himself. What makes this boss so hard is that you have no rings so you can’t afford to make any mistakes because one hit from either of the two bosses will kill you. Needless to say I lost a lot of lives before figuring out the pattern of their attacks and being able to beat them.
If Sonic 1 increased the popularity of Sega then Sonic 2 pretty much cemented their status as Nintendo’s biggest rival to date. Sonic 2 was one of the biggest selling games on the Mega Drive and rightfully so. It was a hugely playable game and even the small versus mode added a lot of replay value to the game. Trying to get all 7 chaos emeralds was also a fairly hard task, especially trying to get the later ones. I played this game over and over for years without really getting bored of it, and it’s not hard to see why when you’ve played the game for yourself. |
