Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker | 4.1 0 comments |
by King ing from Southampton, , England | Dec 3, 2007 |
THE GOOD: + Lovely cel-shaded visuals + Cool dungeons + Nice boss ideas + Clever puzzles + Nice items + Awesome enemiesTHE BAD: - Too short - Bosses, once again, are too easy - The first load of temples are too easy - Sailing to far away lands can get boring - The opening SUMMARY: Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is far from beating Ocarina of Time but it is a good Zelda game with a nice story, cool puzzles and superb visuals. The Gamecube is now in possesion of a truly amazing Zelda game, but this game is also far from perfect, but lets face it. No game is perfect. So can Wind Waker come close to OoT? Lets check it out:
GRAPHICS
These cel-shaded visuals are very pretty.
LoZ: TWW uses a new graphical style known as cel-shaded graphics. These are basically 3D cartoony graphics with bold, 3D worlds and crisp, clear textures. This style is not perfect, as the water looks abit strange. I know its meant to be cartoony and all that, but the water is fully blue. It should have at least a small transparency style in it to make it better. Otherwise the visuals rule. Pretty, clear and colourful. Proves Ninty isn't afraid to try new ideas, even if it has a high risk.
STORY
Wind Waker has quite a slow and boring beginning.
Wind Waker's opening is rubbish compared to other Zelda games. The drawings on the prophecy are strange, but ofcourse it fits in with the fact thats an old prophecy. However, the opening is not at all epic, its very boring and seems to take forever. Basically it displays many images like the one above about an acient prophecy, howver its just not satisfying. I really was angry with it and didn't at all like it. Ninty should stick to their classic epic openings like the one in OoT. The story in this game is basically Links sister, Aryll, is kidnapped by the Helmorac King and Link goes off to save her. He must travel through all sorts of puzzling dungeons and eventually meets Ganindorf. And, again, must stop him from gaining the three pieces of the Triforce. Good story, crap opening.
GAMEPLAY
Dragon Roost Island, the first dungeon.
Wind Waker is basically the same gameply as all Zelda games to date. However, it is easier, shorter and not as much fun as previous ones but the Gameplay is still awesome. The control scheme is improved from OoT as it doesn't mess up as much and the camera can now be set to a FREE mode where players can use the C Stick to move the camera around freely, or press L to set the camera behind them. Its like your hack 'n' slash gameplay, but with awesome items like the Grappling Hook, Iron Boots, Fire, Ice and Light arrows and many more. However, Wind Waker falls flat on its face by not offering enough items such as clothing, or any more boots except the iron ones. Also, Ninty have thrown in a new element to the LoZ series, sailing. Boring? Kinda. Sailing gets very boring if you have to go across the sea, but luckily you get a warp song to play that lets you warp to other locations. Phew.
BAD
 Sailing. Boring and very repetitive.
Wind Waker, like I said, is far from an Ocarina of Time beater and here we prove it. Here are the bad points I sucked out of this game. Firstly, this game is too short. If you're a Zelda master, you may complete it around 15 hours. If your new to the series, it may take you around 20 hours. But most of that is stuffed with easy temples and sailing. I admit, I said Metroid Prime was a long game when it was 25-30 hours but its all spent on challenging puzzles and awesome levels. Wind Waker lacks that. The bosses are also too easy, like in most Zelda games. I have already talked about sailing so no need for that. And I expressed my angryness about the opening for you so no need either.
OVERALL I said it before and I'll say it again, Wind Waker is far from an Ocarina of Time beater. Its short, has many boring sections and is too easy. It is a great game, but in the Zelda dimesion, its only a good one.

If you want a Zelda challenge, OoT is your game. WW is not.

Wind Waker: It's not Ocarina, but what the Hell | 4.6 0 comments |
by Blackgamer2009 from Sioux Falls, SD, | Jul 28, 2007 |
THE GOOD: Great new fighting system Nice storyline Awesome OOT references (You can tell I'm a storyline fan) Great way of traveling Nice Mapping Side Quests superb I actually LIKED the unique graphics The talking boatTHE BAD: Being ripped off to find out where triforce shards are The fact that the Triforce of Courage is an actual thing rather than a spiritual thing Ganondorf disappointed me Story could have been longer and better The ending sucked balls The fact that a certain main character was just using the boat to be able to be in the surface world. SUMMARY: So, I heard about Wind Waker just after my thirteenth birthday, and heard about the stupid graphics, and the fact that you spend your time sailing on a freaking talking boat. Yes, a TALKING BOAT. So I thought, "I don't want to get that shit", especially after being mesmerized by Ocarina of Time. Well, two years later and my Zelda expert and aspiring musician Jared Mogen (Remember that name, he'll be famous someday), and he was kicking ASS in that game. Me, well I changed my mind, and now, two more years later, 2007 during a boring summer filled with Barry Bonds' potential home run record possibly gaining and asterisk;Well, you know all the other sports scandals, I decided to find a controversial game that could actually take my mind off the fact that I am too lazy to call my best friend, and can't even afford a GameCube...so I played my little brother and sister's GameCube, and played WindWaker.
The story starts out pretty interesting. So, in the beginning, a boy named Link (Or whoever the hell you name him before you start) is sleeping, and his little sister (What a twist! An immediate relative!) wakes him up. Afterwards, Link realizes it's his birthday, and goes to his house to get his green clothes, something that is used to honor a certain Hero who traveled through time...wonder who that could be. Anyhow, through a series of events, including saving a female pirate, getting a sword, and sort of being responsible for his sister's abduction by a big ass bird, Link ends up traveling the Great Sea with Tetra to get his sister back. Now, after going to the hood that the bird represents, Link gets *bleep*ed up by the SAME bird just after he found his little sister and some people. Enter Ganon, the God of Evil...or whatever the hell he is in this other dimension where he took over Hyrule for a while.
Anyway, to clear all the rest, Link lands in a rip-off of Kakariko Village, and meets a talking boat, who claims to be the King of Red Lions...yeah, that's the weirdest storyline element, next to the fact that 100 years before all this stuff occured, apparently the Gods thought that problems of Hyrule's people with Ganondorf could be solved by drowning...yes, DROWNING...the land, and leaving the people with generally nothing but a large ass sea. Still, there will be quests, searches, and beacons of hope to save your sister, defeat the big bird that has a fetish for kidnapping pointed ear girls, and then find out why Ganon seems to be an apparent pointed ear child molester.
Now, to the gameplay. The gameplay has improved from Ocarina and Majora's Mask, now creating a system where at the right moment, you can counter attack an enemy, further characterizing Link as a noble hero who looks for self-defense rather than attack and slashing. Now, one interesting thing about a drowned Hyrule (Damn the creative staff), is the fact that now you can roll boatstyle. You can look gangsta with a talking boat that doesn't really exist with a sail. Now another interesting thing in the gameplay I enjoyed was the wind waker, which succeeds the ocarina as the musical instrument of the game. Now, with this, you can control the wind, and later on go to magnificent islands, such as Dragon Roost Island, Windfall Island, your hometown of Outset, and more. Also included is the return of the sun's song, which is now a song that changes from day/night to night/day on the spot, rather than you having to enter a spot. I do believe that the wind waker can sometimes be a little at a disadvantage, and although I get used to it, it's sort of been hard going around in the open time area with a damn shark that looks like it was rejected to play the one in JAWS deciding to take it out of our hero of winds. Other than that, the gameplay itself is good.
Now, to the graphics. Call me an idiot, crazy, or high on crack because I'm black, but I definitely enjoyed the graphics. It was unique and original, and totally unseen. It reminds me of Katamari Damacy's light-hearted graphics, and I think that since Wind Waker was in sort of brighter times rather than dark times, the graphics just stated that (I just couldn't imagine Link becoming an adult in this game with the graphics). Actually, I wouldn't mind if they kept that mentality where dark times are represented through awesome, realistic graphics like Twilight and Ocarina, while Hourglass and Wind Waker keep the light-hearted good in there. Anyway, the unique graphics also made the bosses look cooler, and it characterized the people, so you know that the rich girl turned poor is a bitch (But sort of cute to me...aw, I'm like Ganon now...) and I give them a 5 out of 5...take that Adam Sessler.
Now to the painful and bad...why in the hell do I have to pay 398 *bleep*ing rupees to find one of eight triforce shards?!? That midget Japanese bastard decides to take 3184 rupees out of my goddamn wallet to find something to save Princess Zelda from Ganon (You'll be shocked who she thought she was...but wasn't...) and do that. Seriously, *bleep* you Nintendo. Also, why is the ending good except for the fact that the talking boat that ends up being some ancient being decides to make stupid wish and change Zelda back to a certain character?! That's bullshit! Also, when in the *bleep* was Link required to find eight pieces that happen to be in eight random places?!? In Ocarina, when Ganon touched the triforce, he got his, Zelda got hers, and Link got his...without the other two having to find it. That's bullshit. You wasted three days of my damn life so I can find what happens to be a physical thing that finally goes into my hand when the Gods acknowledge me as the chosen one...for the second damn time. Seriously, *bleep* you Nintendo.
OK, now that my rage-filled rant has ceased, I shall conclude this long ass review. I love the game, and although it doesn't live up to Twilight (I know it's good, can't wait until my brother and sister buy it...aw...) and Ocarina, it becomes third on my list of Zelda Games I've played. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to apply for Carleton College, and all you guys can kiss my ass...especially Adam Sessler.
Final Score: 4.6 out of 5. (Yeah...take that Sessler.) |

The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker (review) | 4.8 0 comments |
by gameboy613 from Long Island, NY, United States | Jul 30, 2005 |
THE GOOD: The gameplay was good, I loved the idea of all of the side quests you could do. The graphics were weird but it was a good kind of weird. The bosses were enjoyable to fight, I liked that you could control the wind while in the boat. The game was very easy to understand.THE BAD: No cheats, I didn't like that you really couldn't do anything special except play the game in your pajamas after beating the game once. I didn't like the fact that you could only use one sword. SUMMARY: Overall I loved this game. It was very easy to understand and you didn't even have to know anything about the Legend of Zelda to know what was going on. The graphics looked kind of ridgity which I liked. The battles were good. There were limited sword attacks that you could use. I loved the idea that the secrets of Zelda and the King of Hyrule was kept throughout most of the game. The little fairy guy Tinkle was very helpful in the game, with the gameboy advance connecter you can control tinkle in the gameboy advance and your player in the gamecube. Tinkle can throw bombs at your opponent but at a cost of some rupees. In the end this game was almost perfect. |

New Link | 4.3 0 comments |

| The new game for the GC, that adds to the Zelda games. The game had new lights with the new cel-shaded graphics, which had a lot of people ohhhing and ahhing. Some people were a little angry because Link had a new look, but that wasn't a big problem. The game begins with Link waking up on his birthday and you go to Link's Grandma's house to get Link's green tunic. Grandma tells you about Link becoming of age of the hero, long ago. Later in the game (not much) Link's sister gets kidnapped by a giant bird (me and my friends say it looks like Ho-oh, from pokemon). Now you go on a ship and infiltrate the Forsaken Fortress. Then later in the game you get a talking boat that is named The King of Red Lions. You sail to diffrent islands, figuring out dungouns. Now you can sail for a long time not knowing where you are going, but that adds up to the games difficulty. You also get a baton called the Wind Waker (ring a bell) where you use it like the ocarina in the past games for the N64. You use the C-stick to conduct songs. The first one you will learn is the wind's requiem, a song which you can controll the wind's direction, which you'll need to sail across the Great Sea. The problem with the game is that it's over more quickly than past games, but it's still solid. The cel-shaded graphics bring a new revolution to game graphics. The AI is smart, the dungouns look great, and the sea and sailing is just amazing. If you are a fan of the Zelda games, you must play this game, if you're not, give it a shot anyways. |

THE GOOD: The cel-shading idea rocks, I'm hooked on the game and if you start this game, keep a lot of time on your hands at all times. The finished game bonuses make the game funner every time you play it.THE BAD: You can't explore Hyrule, the second major flaw in Zelda games. SUMMARY: This game is a connection point that gives completion to all Zelda games except Twighlight Princess, making it a must-play for all zelda fans, it tells where Link got his boat in Links Awakening and tells where all of the Zelda games fit in. I have to admit that leaving out Hyrule was almost as bad as Zelda II, that game stunk. This game gives you all the old weapons and even some new ones like the new enemy weapon feature, the boat rocks, though enemies on the sea and the Forsaken fortress(first run) were a little too tough to handle, the bosses will rock your world and if you're looking for something to do in your spare time, try the mini-games, the main game ist'n that time-consuming, but if you're an adventurer like me and like to complete the game in every sense possible and not possible than this game can take entire days of nonstop gameplay. Enjoy! |

Zelda succeeds on GC | 5.0 0 comments |
by tetratrax from , WA, | Jun 25, 2005 |
THE GOOD: Wonderfully expressive graphics, plenty of sidequests, easy to control characters.THE BAD: Although the sidequests can keep this game from being called "short", there weren't very many dungeons, and the game was overall, much easier than Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. SUMMARY: This is by far, the best game on GC, and probably will remain so until Twilight Princess comes out. I have just one thing to say to those who refuse to play this because of the "childlike" graphics: Drop DEAD. The Cel-shading graphics allowed for easy control and added more expression to the characters than all previous Zelda games. Besides, think how terrible that whole big ocean would look if they used realistic graphics. No, this game needed Cel-shading. As for the rest of the game, the story was more than satisfying; a typical Zelda plot. As I said before, there weren't many dungeons, but there were many more monsters, sidequests, items, and weapons than other Zelda games. This game was what made me decide to buy a GC, so I recommend this game for any fantasy/adventure fan. |

Zelda does it again | 4.6 0 comments |

THE GOOD: This is the good about the game:
Great action Terrific story Sail the seas with a magic talking boat With a great variety of weapons you will be unstoppable A new cartoon look to the games style Great puzzles Day and night time Use a magical Wind Waker to control wind and more Constallations and real looking moon Ghost boat and treasure to hunt for Huge castles Huge bosses Carry around camera and take rare pictures Then have those pictures made into clay modelsTHE BAD: The following is the bad:
Puzzles can get confusing
That is really all. Only the puzzles irritate me. Other wise there is nothing really bad about this game.SUMMARY: Plot: This is such a great adventure game. You and your magical boat try to save your sister. As the adventure goes on Link gets mixed in with saving the world. As your adventure goes on your sword gets powerful. You gain more knowledge and get stronger.
Bosses: There are some pretty huge bosses in this game. Each with their own weaknesses. Some you may even need more than your sword to get the job done.
Adventure and Action: These two words are based on the whole game. If you don't like the story you can still travel around and sail the seas to find dungeon's, treasure, trouble, and items worth finding. Sleep under the stars and look at the view with your telescope. Watch out a ghost boat may sail by. Giving you a scare. You can also find treasure maps and hunt out the treasure.
Puzzles: Yeah this game has it's puzzles. From huge dungeon's, to castles you are always given a puzzle to solve. Some are easy some are hard. It is all about how smart you are.
Graphics: This game has a cartoon look to it. I think the graphics make this game unique. The bosses and monsters look awesome with this addition.
The Windwaker: Link gets hold of a Wind Waker where he must use the wind to make Melody's that have effects. One melody changes the time from day to night. One lets you change the direction of the wind. One lets you make a tornado to warp you anywhere you want. It is up to you how you use the wind.
Tingle: Hook up your Game Boy Advanced and use your Tingle turner to call Tingle. A green fairy who can Ade you on your adventure. One of your friends can play on the Game Boy Advanced and watch where you are and where treasure, items, or enemies are at. You can even buy things from Tingle to make you walk in mid air or have an attack boost. You can watch where your friend is on your TV just like he an watch you on the GBA.
Overall: I love this game. It is the best Zelda game ever in my opinion. With the great story, graphics, weapons, adventure, and fun it is just great. The whole family can play.
I give this game a 4.6 out of 5. |

THE GOOD: Cel Shading fits this game perfectly, cool characters, nice weapons as always, not too easy and not too hard, fit for any age group.THE BAD: A few parts can get a bit too easy, is also a little bit short for a Zelda game, no real character voices, sailing at the beginning is extremely boring. SUMMARY: My first thought at this game was "wow!". When I first started playing it, it was hard for me to put down the controller because the gameplay hooked me in. Now im not saying that gameplay is the strongest point in the game or anything, but it certainly doesnt lack in any areas. If so, then not by much. As the game progressed, The Wind Waker never ceased to amaze me. It was the second Zelda game that I actually had the nerve to beat and because of it, I was encouraged to try out the others. If you really are looking for a fun game thats somewhat lenghty and a classic, then this is your choice. Major price drop has occured as well, so its now cheap to pick up and play.
I would definetly recommend this game to any Zelda fan out there because it really is a solid game. From the beginning to the ending it is quite fun to play, and I didn't feel like I was doing homework and was forced to play it like Majora's Mask (N64). Overall, it is a really fun game to play no matter what age group you are in, and even though its not that long as I expected it, you'll need some time on your hands in order to complete everything. |

THE GOOD: I think the cel-shaded is really good and gives emotion to the characters.THE BAD: Links head is a little to big. It's pretty short. SUMMARY: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is the first Zelda game to have been released on the Gamecube and it wasn't a dissapointment although it certainly was different. The new cel-shaded feature gives more emotion to the face of Link and all of the people you see through out the game. The controls are pretty symple and you have R-targeting instead of Z which is ok. The sound is pretty good and matches the scenery around you which is also good. There are a few secrets you can get in the game for doing various things. I think the game is a little on the short side as it only take a few days to finish.
Overall itis one of my all time favourite games and i still play it through every so often. |

Ah, Zelda. The franchise is probably one of the most loved of all time. And for good reason too. The Legend of Zelda games offer immersive gameplay and rewarding quests, and Link’s latest adventure is no exception.
Gameplay This is the meat-and-potatoes of any game, and Zelda serves a hearty meal. Zelda is an absolute blast to play. Anyone who is a fan of any of the previous adventures will find something to like here. The traditional find a new tool and use it a lot element still remains and many will find some of their old favorites along with some new items to keep things fresh. As for the difficulty of the game, I didn’t find it as challenging as the other titles. This isn’t to say that it was easy; however the fighting system was extremely easy to master. Most of the difficulty I found occurred in the puzzles of the game. Zelda games always had puzzle elements to them, though I found them to be more prominent in the Wind Waker. Control in Zelda is very intuitive. Link responds quickly to every command, and that really helps in some of the more hectic encounters. The only problem that I had with the gameplay was that the camera was sometimes in odd positions, especially in one particular boss battle, where Link seemed to disappear in the heat of battle. But, it I didn’t run into such problems very much, so it didn’t take away from the overall game.
Graphics The graphics for the Wind Waker has been the hot debate topics ever since Link’s new look was announced. The cartoon-like look lends itself well to the game. I personally think that it is some of the best graphics the Gamecube has put out yet. All of the characters have an imaginative look to them and the bosses emit a sense of grandeur. One thing that impressed me in particular was the elemental effects. For example, there is a point where you are in the vicinity of a volcano and near a lake. The attention to detail of the ashes falling on the water made my jaw hit the floor. There was only one problem that I saw consistently, and that was a large amount of clipping. Characters seemed to walk through objects a lot. This, however, is only nit-picking. It doesn’t subtract fun from playing, but it is something that I noticed.
Sound Simply put, the soundtrack is beautiful. At first I was somewhat disappointed to not hear the traditional, familiar tunes from the Zelda games as much as I had liked, but the new music quickly became some of my favorite ever to grace my speakers. Not only is the music fantastic, but the sound effects are equally astounding. You won’t necessarily notice all of them right away, but it’s the little things that count.
Replayability Well, I thought the game was simply brilliant, and deserves at least one more time through again. Honestly, I will probably play through it many more times, as there is a plethora of things that I didn’t get. The game took a fair amount of time, but I honestly didn’t keep track, and the game only logs the last time you played. But for me, it was quality time spent and I look forward to the future visits.
Final Recommendation This game is a masterpiece. Easily one of the best games out for the system, this game belongs in every adventure fan’s library. If you ever played a Legend of Zelda game and had the least bit of fun, you’ll love it. A slick combination of beautiful graphics, unforgettable sound, immersive gameplay and an epic quest make this my favorite game this year.
