Rebel strike is clearly a game that tries to be much more than its prequel Rogue Leader. While Rogue Leader’s goal was just re-creating the three first Star Wars movies air and space-battles as accurately and visually stunning as possible, Rebel strike not just features more of an original storyline, but several separate main-stories, the introduction of ground battles, where you are controlling different characters from the Star Wars universe as they battle Stormtroopers and other baddies just armed with blasters, in addition to far more controllable ships and crafts. If that’s not enough, it features a multiplayer as well, not only with a battle-mode but also a co-up mode, based on Rogue Leader. Sounds impressive, but how does it work? Answer is, it really varies.

However, lets first review the technical aspects. Visually, it is like Rogue Leader beautiful to look at, but for some reason, maybe because of the time Rogue Leader came out, maybe because Rebel Strike’s visuals, like the game, is of variable quality depending on the setting, I remember Rogue Leader as more stunning it this category. Make no mistake however, Rebel Strike is still a looker. Sound-wise, both games seem equally strong, with much great Star Wars music and good sound-effects.

The gameplay aspect is where the games most clearly differ. As mentioned, Rebel Strike outclasses Rogue Leader in terms of variation, but does that make it a superior game? Not automatically, as I found out. While Rogue Leader was a limited game, at times painfully unforgiving, it nonetheless did what it was supposed to do extremely well, and when you mastered it, you really could appreciate this fact (to bad it was so extremely hard to master). Then we have Rebel Strike tries to do so much, but is in danger of failing to really do any of the parts really well.

That might be a bit too harsh, as the air and space missions are highly entertaining, with many Tie-fighters to shoot down and many different tasks. But the whole constructed storyline and setting doesn’t feel convincing. That might not sound important, but much of the strength of the past Rogue Squadron games was related to how they placed you in an authentic Star Wars universe, and how they made you feel that YOU were shaping events. Rebel Strike lacks this feeling.

This weakens the other parts of the game’s chances being really meaningful addition to the story and universe as a whole, but they still could be potential enjoyable additions. And such parts as when you control an AT-ST are certainly a good laugh, the problem is the on foot ground levels, that from the weak control and annoying camera, to the deeply limited mission objectives it feels like that was just thrown into the mix just to add variation. The part where you control a speeder also falls short of its promise, quickly becoming reppetive and annoying.

So why do I still give the game such a high score? Well, as mentioned it looks and sounds great, and the air & space missions are very good on their own, while the difficulty level is more sensible than it was in Rogue Leader. And though much of the other elements feel rushed, they can (except the exclusively annoying speeder-part) be amusing and the variation they provide is anyway welcome. And then there’s the multiplayer.

Not that the battle-mode is that good, unless you make a gentleman’s agreement with your friend to abstain using missiles, the battles will be reduced to just shooting each other down from distance with homing missiles. But the co-operation mode, that consists of the whole Rogue Leader, as a multiplayer co-up game, is such an impressive addition that it itself warrants a high score.

Is Rebel Strike better than Rogue Leader? It has more to offer certainly, but overall not nearly as well made, it is at many parts more fun to play, but others are by far inferior. Rebel Strike features a multiplayer to boast its lifespan, Rogue Leader relies on the medal-system, working far better there than in Rebel Strike, to bring gamers back. Overall, they both have some serious weak points, but their strengths are more numerous and important. Also, both games can safely be recommended to any Star Wars fan.

THE GOOD:
The new vehicles, how you can now walk around andthe guns. Also you can now get in the At-Sts which in my opinion is great!

THE BAD:
Sometimes it is too hard to get a gold to unlock some bonus levels, but does that really matter?

SUMMARY:

Star Wars Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III is the new Star Wars game for the Gamecube, in which my opinion is the best Star Wars game on a console so far.
There are some new vehicles you can use, including the AT-STs which personally I think are really cool. It feels good to be controlling one and destroying other people and letting them feel the pain that they gave to you!
You can now walk around in this game, which is really good because on the last game, you could only use vehicles, and not get out of them. I have gave this game 4.5 because you can get out of your vehivle, but only in certain places wherre there is a shiney blue thing, which is a shame but I suppose it would ruin the style of the game wouldn't it.
Sometimes you have people on your team as you invade battleships and you have a pistol and sometimes a storm trooper machine gun which really gives you a thrill.
This game is a must get for any Star Wars fans and for any gamer who likes flying and walking around and exploring places. I reallywanted this game, I got it, I completed it and I loved It - So should You! Get It Now!

THE GOOD:
Most of it is good or okay. The graphics are amazing, better than Rogue Leader, you can't argue with that. Also I really like the co op Rogue Leader, its great. I'm glad they finally have a Rogue Squadron game that has multiplayer.

THE BAD:
Too easy and too short, as well as a few flaws.

SUMMARY:
I really enjoyed the new vehicles, they were cool, especially taking control of an AT-ST. I also enjoyed the multiplayer stuff, it's a big change. My friend and I spent a long time on the co op Rogue Leader, they made it a lot harder. I tried playing it by myself but it's definitely more fun playing with a friend (and of course I lost real quick, because the second ship wasn't being manned and when either one of you runs out of lives in the life pool the game ends). Also the games where you went head to head against each other, those kept things fresh. The bonus disc that came with it along with the old Star Wars arcade games were good too. Factor 5 definitely put an endless amount of effort into this game. One more thing was the graphics. The graphics were truly breathtaking, crisp and clear images. A bad thing was that Rebel Strike itself was too easy, especially if you were a master at Rogue Leader. I thought that there should have been more air battles, and harder ones at that. The second thing is that the on foot levels were unpleasant. You couldn't really have control of the camera, and its too easy as there's a generous auto lock system, and you can just hammer at the fire button to take out a group. I also thought that the lightsaber would rock, but you can't really do much with it. That frustrated me a lot. What I truly think about Rebel Strike is that it's an all around good game. However, if you are a casual looking-for-an-awesome-game person, I wouldn't really buy Rebel Strike. If I was a true Star Wars fan that can take a few flaws, I'd definitely buy this game.

THE GOOD:
it brings a new dimension to the series with the ground missions.

THE BAD:
the new, scaled down AI, is much weaker than the one in Rogue Leader so if you found Leader unbeatable, then this may be more for you're liking.

SUMMARY:
the game is pretty good by most standards, but thruth be told there are some major flaws in it. Factor 5 went a long way with Rogue Leader, perhaps too far because now they have released Rebel Strike. If you are a die hard star wars fan, then the game is good and you might want to consider it, but if you were a fan of Rogue Leader and that's it then i'm going to have to say rent it first. the scaled down AI makes even the ace mode somewhat easy and the grainy graphics that accompany the frustrating controls for the ground missions only detract from the game. some upsides to the game is that the space missions are as stunning as ever and some new controls and features for the craft make those fun, the fact is that there aren't really a lot of them. in fact the entire Luke side of the campaign has only speeder and ground battles, whereas the Wedege side only has about five space missions. I suggest the game to fans, but to those who are looking at it in passing i say RENT IT, and then make your descision.
