Mega Man II is an action platforming game for the Game Boy handheld, retaining the basic gameplay of the NES titles. Players challenge up to nine stages of 2D side-scrolling action, drawn from Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 on NES. As a result it contains a number of Robot Master bosses from both titles in one release:

Mega Man 2
  • Wood Man
  • Air Man
  • Crash Man
  • Metal Man
Mega Man 3
  • Top Man
  • Hard Man
  • Magnet Man
  • Needle Man
Mega Man will earn a special weapon based on the Robot Master's signature ability upon defeating him, which can then be used to target the weakness of another boss. So gameplay encourages players to find the optimal order in beating the Robot Masters.

Mega Man II for the Game Boy was the first in the handheld series to introduce a unique boss, typically introduced in the games as a robot designed and instructed to defeat Mega Man. The game was considered poorly made, a fact which series artist Keiji Inafune attributed to outsourcing its production to a studio that was ill suited for the task.
