Random Dueling Blobs With Artificial Mortal Kombat Flavor | 3.0 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Ambitious. Lots of extras for the single player. Occasional moments of fun. Much much better that the other MK GBA game. Best 3D fighter on GB.THE BAD: Stupid AI. Poorly defined graphics. Limited moves. Ineffective controls. Gets old quickly. SUMMARY: The other versions of this game are awesome. The GBA version is ruined by blobby graphics for the fighters, though the backgrounds are very nicely done. Besides graphics issues, the controls are too simple. Each fighter has less than 20 moves, which means the matches get old real quick. Instead of using the shoulder buttons as guard and mode change, Midway should have used them for attacks, which could have given the Kombatants more moves.
So besides bad graphics and simplistic Kontrols, any other issues? Yep. AI is dumb as rocks. You can beat the computer fighter just a little bit and then retreat and they'll just stand there until they lose the match on a time out. The first 5 or 6 opponents are lethargic and more like punching bags, and then the final 4 or 5 opponents are like terriers on speed and hit you with multi-hit combos in the blink of an eye. Thats not AI, that's a speed boost.
Finally, the animations in the Kombat are often confusing and blurry and it is sometimes hard to see who did what to whom. The characters also share the same grunts of pain, so in a fast flurry of strikes, between the same grunt noises and the dodgy animations, the action is incredibly unclear, though all the groans and yips sound like someone trying to pass a kidney stone, which adds some humor to the whole mess.
Good points? The Krypt adds some replay value and the game includes a good amount of backstory for each character. The game has a real MK feel to it, which is a mark of integrity. Finally, Midway did try hard on this one, much more so than on some of their earlier GBA titles.
All in all though, Street Fighter 3 Alpha is a much much better fighter on GBA. Yes, you lose the ability to sidestep on SF3, but you get tighter conrrols, better graphics, and more frames of animation so you can see what the hell is happening in the fight. MKDA is an excellent game on the PS2 and Gamecube, but unfortunately you really can't carry it around with you. Complete and utter MK junkies should consider this if they don't mind sacrificing playability for atmosphere, but all other fighting game fans should wait till they get home to play MKDA. |
