While Contra 4 doesn't necessarily improve on the respected series template, it's unquestionably a return to form, likely to sate rabid fans while simultaneously terrorizing unprepared newbies. Lets just hope that it's enough of a success to warrant a follow-up that takes a few more chances with the formula.
"In the end, however, Contra 4 happily sidesteps the mistakes that plagued other failed entries in the series. The nostalgic goodies and difficulty settings add to its richness. Unless you're a wimp, rush out and buy a copy."
It's mean, it's intense, it's difficult, and it's a raucous good time. In a nutshell, it's Contra.
The thing is, even on Normal difficulty, Contra 4 is brutal. It'll take a dozen tries at least to get through the first level and defeat the boss, and by then you'll be down too many continues to get through the rest of the insanely difficult challenges. Don't think for a second that this game will be a cakewalk to plow through - it took us an hour of practice to snag a somewhat clean runthough of Level One in video.
Contra 4 is great Contra Fan Service. The core game design is a fresh fight that stays true to the 8 and 16-bit editions. At the same time, you can unlock two of the games that the fans hold near and dear, and via an in-game museum you can view the series' timeline through boxart and screen grabs. You should be aware that the Contra 4 game design will be one of the toughest challenges you'll ever face on the Nintendo DS. Even though it doesn't do anything tremendously new, it's a game that'll really separate the men from the boys…and it'll give casual gamers an appreciation for design that's been lost to the ages.
