Sonic's Back, and Better than Ever | 3.6 0 comments |
by sneakman from , , | Jun 9, 2008 |
Sonic has kept a pretty streamlined reputation over the years, and now he takes the big leap into 3-d (which should've been done with Xtreme for the Saturn which was never released) and this review will tell you of the results.
Before the plunge into Adam Sessler's trash can, this game continued his reputation, but due to this being a somewhat blatently honest video game review, I'm covering everything, right down to his sneakers(ok maybe not that far).
The storyline goes like this: the Master Emerald was created to nullify the power of the Chaos Emeralds, and inside it is sealed a water being known as Chaos 0, who wreaked havoc on Angel Island many years ago. Now he's broken free again and Ro-Butt-nik wants to use Chaos for his own personal gain, so the hunt for the chaos emeralds is on, and he actually gets his pudgy little hands on all of them but six in the end, but Chaos developed enough of a mind of his own to snag the last one from Tail's crashed plane(smooth move fox-boy) and it's up to Sonic to go Super Sonic on his ass and save the already flooded Station Square.
The storyline I just told you is simply the core storyline. Every character has their own unique storyline that intertwines with the storylines of others.
Each character also has their own unique gameplay style as well: Sonic-blaze through level with the amazing speed he's known for Tails-beat opponent to goal Knuckles-this game introduces a gameplay style that goes on to plague the sequel as well. You have a limited area and you must search for three pieces of the master emerald by gliding, digging, etc. On a humerous note, Egghead tricks Knuckles into fighting Sonic by saying Sonic's after the pieces too( Knuckles is just that easy. Perverted joke intended) E-102 Gamma- you are timed and you must go to the end of the level and claim a target or kill your brothers( the only reason he wasn't in the sequel was because he needed counseling) Amy-Sonic's stalker with the hammer. You are trying to reach the end of the level while avoiding and hammering Zero, the chubby robot that's after your birdie. Big-a character new to the Sonic scene: his missions are searching for his sex slave(or in E rated terms his frog), and you do it by means of fishing.
Sorry that took so long. Now for the actual review. First off, the graphics are incredible and look amazingly pristine as Sonic is brought into this new light( they're just not as realistic as we would like, but hey, it's the Dreamcast). Next on the list is the Soundtrack, and this soundtrack kicks ass! The songs chosen for the levels give them their own personalities, and the Rock tracks were pretty sweet as well, and also the Chao Race song is cool.
The storyline is pretty good as well, but the gameplay just doesn't have the same magic as it did on the Genesis, and part of that comes from the constant slowdowns due to glitches in the framerate, obnoxious camera angles, and looming darkness in levels that makes it impossible to see crap at times (Sky Deck and Lost World (then again it's supposed to be dark in Lost World)). Also the camera angles suck underwater when you're fishing for crying out loud, and you can't see what you're trying to catch.
Next there's the Chao system. First off, I love Chaos, I think they're adorable, and wish they were real so I could hug them like the teddy bears I hugged when I was two. Unfortunately there are some flaws, such as the best way to raise them and only way to get them to reproduce is through the VMU, how annoying it is to do Chao Races, and how the controls don't always work properly and Sonic ends up spin-dashing Chaos, and after a few attacks, they just won't stop crying. Don't worry: it gets more enjoyable later on, and by later on, I mean when SA2 comes out.
The game also has a free-roaming style of gameplay that, though is cool, gets redundant after a while. This game also introduces the emblem system, where you get emblems (130 in all) for various accomplishments, such as clearing missions and high scores on minigames, and while it adds replay value, it, too, gets redundant. While it also has many cool minigames, we were disappointed at the lack of a multiplayer mode. However, the free-roaming aspect gives heed to some tight glitches that allow you to put characters in levels they can't normally play.
Altogether, while it can be frustrating at times, it's a very solid title that gets 4 random chaos getting rammed by a spin dash out of 5(I don't use decimals in the actual reviews). |

THE GOOD: Incredible Graphics designs, Awesome sounds, Great fit-in Music, Controllers working great, the greatest original characters are back like amy and knuckles, the story makes perfect sense, and on 3D levels YAY... YAY... YAY!!!! Oh yeah... it's on dreamcast and Nintendo gamecube.THE BAD: The only bad thing is the loading part... I hate that, but you'll get use to it. SUMMARY: Sega makes the best 3D design Sonic.... which is SONIC ADVENTURE. It makes sense, because you can explore everywhere, go back to the levels, adventure fields, that's why it called Sonic Adventure. Soic Adventure makes a true Sonic games and you sonic fans gotta love it.

THE GOOD: EverythingTHE BAD: Nothing besides the camera view a little bit SUMMARY: Let me start out with my most favorite characters of all time! * drum roll* Chaos! I love the chaos. They are so cute and cuddly. I like the evil chaos. I think Sonic is cool but I dont know why. He looks really cool and he has weird friends. Like that fat dude that goes fishing. Oh....anyways....the game is good and I would probably recommend on buying it. This game is better than Sonic Adventure 2....at least I think it is.....well I can think about that later. Oh yeah and that fat dude in the red shirt is really annoying. His name is egghead i think. I forgot. It had something to do with an egg but I really hate him....grrrrr....he gets me so annoyed he just pops out of no where and steals your little crystal gem thingies!! Then you have to go find him and get them back and then et more and the same thingy goes over and over and over until you just get really really annoyed by egghead. That is all I have to say. This game was good |

The first half decent 3D Sonic game. | 4.4 0 comments |
by Master of the VG from San Diego, CA, | Sep 26, 2003 |
THE GOOD: The game looks nice Some of the music from the 2D sonic games are remixed into this game.THE BAD: The bad camera leads to many cheap deaths. Some of the levels are way too easy. SUMMARY: There have been a few attempts before to make a 3D Sonic game. They all pretty much failed. This game does a good job of being fun, but it is still no match for the old 2D Sonic games. Don't get me wrong, I like this game. I just think that it could have done so much more though. The bad camera was a major problem. It seemed to move around at the worst possible times. I also had a problem with how easy some of the levels were. On the good side, I really did enjoy hearing some familiar tunes during the game.
Bottom Line: Give this game a shot to see if you like it. |

Sonic Done Right | 4.6 0 comments |

THE GOOD: CHARACTERS, storyline, levels, graphics are pretty good, gameplay, combat, and upgrades.THE BAD: There are some problems with the controls, the camera can be a bitch sometimes, and the dialogue is a little campy. SUMMARY: I spent the entire summer of 2001, playing Sonic Adventure on my Dreamcast. I had never had so much fun. SA is definitely one of the best games ever. The storyline is perfect, the gameplay and characters are wonderful, and it will occupie you for a very long time. Everyone that I know of, loves this game, and I do just as much as they do. The story starts out, Sonic and Tails are taking a tropical vacation, in a seaside city called, 'Station Square'. However, something is amiss...an old ancient Echidna past is awakened, and Dr. Eggman (AKA Robotnik) is at it again to steal the powerful Chaos Emeralds. You, have the choice of playing as Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails the Fox, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy the Hedgehog, and Big the Cat. Each char has a different storyline, but they all inter-twine together. Personally, my favourite storyline to play is Big the Cat - I love that guy. ^^ The ending is really good, and you'll flip over who you play at as the final boss stage. If you don't have this game, get it now. |

Sonic Comes to Town in a Game | 5.0 0 comments |
by LightningThedgehog from Meltokio, , Tethe'Alla | Apr 19, 2003 |
THE GOOD: The graphics and music. For such an old console, it sure carries a good graphic view.THE BAD: When you feel like telling me, PM me, okay? SUMMARY: The plot isn't as simple as some games that you may have played and everything from gameplay to fun is packaged in ONE GAME!
CHARAC.
-Sonic, the super-speedy hedgehog with that steadfast heart of gold (hero) -Amy, a Sonic g/f wannabe. For such a sweet hedgehog, she's got a killer weapon-the Piko-Piko Hammer. (hero) -Tails, Sonic's friend and techy dude. Aside from helping Sonic, he's got a few secrets he'd like to tell. (hero) -Knuckles, Sonic's former enemy. -Eggman, a hideous man who would like to take over the world. ((Tough luck!)) (dark) -Tikal, friend of Chaos 0. -Chaos 0, can turn into Perfect Chaos when he has all the 7 chaos emeralds under his control and Eggman forces him to do his biding?
In this game, it's much of a action-packed game and it should keep you sitting on the edge of the seat.
**Note that the Chaos Emeralds play a major part in this game. |

THE GOOD: Everything.THE BAD: It ends. SUMMARY: It has plenty to do, and loads of interesting viewpoints. Some who have everything to do with whats going on, some with less to do with it, some 1 only looking for his pal and getting slightly caught up in it. It has loads of cool mini games and different moves to be discovered hidden away. There is a good selection of characters, so plenty of storylines to follow. 2 cool! |
