Smash Bros. for 3DS features a grand total of 51 playable characters that can be used in the main game modes including Classic, All-Star and Stadium. Character special attacks and stats can be customized using equipment items for friendly matches, but customized characters cannot normally be used in online matches. Customized characters can also be exported into amiibo figures for upcoming features.
Players can engage in local and online multiplayer matches, with the latter divided into two types: "For Fun" and "For Glory". For Fun matches are not ranked and players are free to set restrictions as they choose, while For Glory matches can only take place in Final Destination versions of stages with no items and custom characters allowed.
Exclusive to the 3DS version are the Smash Run and StreetSmash modes which are optimized for quick play on the go.
