Mario is back and he's once again playing golf with all of his friend and enemies. No, it doesn't make any sense, but when has golf ever made sense? Mario Golf: World Tour brings the franchise to the Nintendo 3DS handheld, the first title to be released in the series since 2004's Mario Golf: Advance Tour. That is to say, Mario Golf: World Tour had a tremendous opportunity to reinvent or redefine itself.

Instead, it didn't. Mario Golf: World Tour is staggeringly similar to its predecessors, offering a simplified or even arcade-like version of golf. The core golf experience is retained, with played playing through courses while attempting to garner low scores by putting in the ball in a minimum number of swings. Even the courses, which fairly said are located in various areas of the Mushroom Kingdom, are still almost identical to their real-life counterparts. Mario Golf: World Tour is a golf game through and through.

That isn't to say that Mario Golf: World Tour doesn't add some flair to the experience. Each character on the Mario-exclusive roster has the ability to use assorted power-ups to give their shots a little magic it'd otherwise be lacking. There's also an online multiplayer mode in the game, a first in the series, allowing players to go through asynchronous tournaments against friends and strangers.

Altogether, however, Mario Golf: World Tour is exactly what it makes itself out to be. A simple and friendly golf title starring Mario and his friends as they take a break at the Mushroom Kingdom's golf club and shoot a few rounds.
