I love this book. Although, when I try and analyse why, I have some difficulty. Is it the intriguing plot that draws you in and makes the book unable to put down? The love story that had me sobbing my heart out? The characters? I'm not sure.
The Time Traveller’s Wife follows the story of a couple, Henry and Clare. Henry has an illness - his bodily clock constantly resets. Every so often, particularly when under stress, his body drags him to another part of time. He has no control over where and when he goes, although certain events seem to draw him - for instance, he has seen his mother’s death hundreds of times, at different ages from different angles. Another event that draws him is his wife's childhood; in the normal course of events, Henry did not meet Clare until he was twenty-eight and she was twenty. However, Clare has memories of meeting Henry when she was six years old. After meeting Clare, Henry begins to be drawn to her childhood, gradually filling in his half of the memories they share. This is a part of what makes the book so intriguing - Henry and Clare only have small pieces of information, and they gather more as they go through their peculiar timeline. This means that you get more out of the book every time you read it, as you link together more pieces in your mind.
The story is told both from Clare and Henry's viewpoints, which makes the plot much more involving. You get as much information as if it were third person with the involvement and personal interest of first.
Although the book is technically sci-fi, Audrey Niffenegger's writing makes it perfectly plausible and believable. Far more important is the love story between Clare and Henry. It's truly romantic - even thinking about it now, I'm in tears. It's not corny or sappy - it's just plain romantic.
In summary, this is more for romance fans than sci-fi fans, although I bet anyone could find something in the book to interest them.
