About this Book

Lyra Belacqua is an orphan who has lived in Jordan College, in Oxford, all her life. Her Uncle Asriel visits every now and then; but Lyra is content hanging out with Roger, her best friend who works in the kitchen; and roaming wild through the streets of Oxford having mud fights and playing with the gyptian kids.
One day, however, kids all across Oxford - and the rest of the world - start disappearing. Rumors going around say that there's a organization of people, called the General Oblation Board, or Gobblers for short, are going around kidnapping children and taking them to a laboratory in the North to perform mysterious operations.
Lyra and her friends even make up a game of gobblers and good guys. It's all fun and games, until Roger, Lyra's best friend, and Billy, one of the gyptian boys, gets kidnapped.
Now Lyra must go on a journey to save the friends she loves. She's not alone, though; with the company of gyptian sailors, a bear, a witch and a cowboy aeronaut, Lyra goes forward into the cold, white arctic pole and through ice and snow, to help solve the mystery begind the Gobblers - and her own parents.
Little does she now, however, that she determines the destiny of the entire world; and all of the universes; in existance... there is a prophecy about Lyra. She must make a great betrayal. She must act on the part of Eve in the bible - and she alone holds the fate of all creation in her hands.
