THE GOOD:
- Great plotline
- Huge character development with Roran
- Many new characters are introduced
- Leaves you thirsting for the next book
- Drops a lot of hints that tell you a lot more about what to expect in the third book
- A great theme with courageous characters and real-life struggles
THE BAD:
- Quite long
- Many ideas taken from The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, among others - for example Aragorn, excuse me Eragon falls for the elven princess Arwen, excuse me, Arya, etc. etc. etc.
SUMMARY: The sequel to Eragon, and the second book in the Inheritance Series, Eldest has sold millions of copies around the world.
Christopher Paolini, the author of these marvelous novels, is well beyond his years as far as writing prowess goes. Already a famous author worldwide, Paolini is 24 years old. He started writing Eragon when he was 15 years old, and Eldest right away after Eragon was published.
But now about the book: As you should hopefully know if you are reading this, Eragon was a 15-year-old boy when he first found his dragon Saphira's egg at the beginning of the first book. He traveled throughout the world of Alagaesia to meet his destiny as a Dragon Rider. The movie gave a very bad impression of the book, didn't stick to it, and hardly followed the same storyline. The book is much better than made out, and you should definitely read it before reading Eldest.
Eldest picks up where Eragon left off. King Hrothgar has died in the battle of Farthen Dûr, and Eragon needs to complete his training. I won't give away too much about the plot, but I'll just say that Ellesmera is VERY far away and there is a big journey that they must make to get there. They also come across some very unusual settlements and learn a bit about dwarven religion.
I would hope this review sends you scrambling to your nearest bookstore to buy Eldest, but one shouldn't expect everything.
