This book begins with four very different characters who all meet on top of a tower block on New Years Eve. Each of them intends to kill themselves.

Now, with a beginning like that, anything that happens next is bound to be interesting.

The book is told from the varying view points of the characters. There's no pattern - rather the story is told from the view of the character who happens to be doing the most at this time. Many authors try and give each character equal chapters, which means that some sections are slightly forced, but Nick Hornby's method keeps the action flowing.

However, I did not enjoy this as much as Hornby's other books. This book is no less well written than any of his others, but for some reason I didn't believe it. I'm not sure if that is due to me or the author, but this book seems to be lacking the realism and true to life observations found in his other work. I also just plain didn't like the ending - I didn't find it dramatic enough, or, as I said, real enough. or it could be that the lack of drama is real, and it's my own viewpoint that's at fault.

Not a bad book, but I doubt I'll be reading it over and over again.
