Portable USB MP3 Player Roundup - PAGE 6

Sensory Science RAVE MP 2200

Sensory Science's MP-2200 Box
Of all the players on the market that we’ve seen thus far, the Sensory Science rave mp MP2200 is one of the most solid contenders, and sports some features and a design that makes it a powerful and chic portable music device. The player manages to cram a great many features, 64MB of built-in RAM, an additional SmartMedia slot for memory expansion, a large LCD display, a voice recorder, and an FM tuner into a compact and lightweight unit – in fact, the mp2200 is the most compact of the players in the roundup.

The player has a very suave design, with a matt chrome and grey colour scheme that blends functionality with aesthetic appeal. Construction is nice and solid, and the buttons are made of a high grade, ultra cool silver plastic. Those buttons also have a nice and distinctive tactile feel that leaves no question as to whether or not they’ve been activated properly. The major buttons are arranged on the front, beneath the LCD display, and provide access to play, pause, stop, fast-forward, rewind, volume and EQ controls. A hold switch is placed just below the miniscule covered USB port on one side of the player, while on the other side buttons give access to mode selection, function selection, and erase/recording controls (which are used with the voice recording capabilities of the player).

All the tools you need
Controls wise, the really impressive part is that the MP2200 comes with a matching inline remote and matching earphones that are nearly pieces of art unto themselves. Being a long time gadget geek with an extensive experience with Japanese and Korean made tech toys, I’ve always looked at inline remotes as the ultimate in convenience and ease of use. The MP22000 remote gives you access to track selection, play, pause, and stop controls, as well as an analog audio control wheel. This is the only unit in the roundup to have this bonus and yet it remains easily within the price range of the others. It’s really an amazing accomplishment.

The unit weighs 74grams (6.4 ounces) without batteries - and it shouldn’t weigh much more with the “batteries” because it only requires a single AA battery for up to 10 hours of playback, according to Sensory Science. The dimensions are literally barely any larger than that of a cigarette box, being 2.26” X 3.29” X 0.68” (WxLxD), and the unit slips easily into a shirt or jacket pocket – more so thanks to the remote which you can clip to your shirt and from which you can do most of your listening controls.
