Cordless Wheel Mouse Roundup - PAGE 2
Anthony Roberts - Monday, July 3rd, 2000

Logitech Cont'd

Ergonomic from Head to Toe
The most surprising thing with the Cordless Mouseman Wheel turned out to be its amazing performance. Not only did it easily live up to Logitech's claim of 5 feet range, it went above and beyond in its tour of duty. We were hard pressed to find any jitters, lagginess, or lack of response and accuracy even up to 7 feet away from the receiver. Compared to the Microsoft Cordless Wheel Mouse, Logitech's cordless wonder is amazing in its sheer audacity even at long ranges. And the range is not the sole thing that impressed us: we could snake the receiver anywhere we liked and performance was not the least affected. The Microsoft Cordless Wheel Mouse suffered a little performance anxiety even within its specified operation range when the line of sight was obscured by multiple obstacles, but similar tests did not seem to worry the Logitech Cordless Mouseman Wheel.

Further, the Mouseman Wheel had a more refined feel to its cursor movement - a smoother, more natural response made it nearly impossible to distinguish between the Cordless Mouseman and its corded twin, the regular Mouseman Wheel. In nearly every aspect, the cordless mouseman wheel was a delight to use. The one area where the Mouseman Wheel failed to impress was its response in fast action twitch games, and in that area, the mouse failed quite miserably.

Thumb button: Great for Double Clicks
In our gaming tests, the mouse simply would not perform the way a corded mouse did; response was noticeably lagged, and it seemed as though the game were not receiving all of the signals generated by mouse movements. In Unreal Tournament, there was a considerable difference in finite control and a definite loss in finesse. I wasn’t able to make large and sudden changes of direction without some sort of motion sickness as the screen jittered from my character’s incoherent movements. Less action oriented titles were less affected, in that we once again regained a more synchronous cursor to mouse relationship. All in all, we were sorely disappointed in the gaming performance, and after the exuberation of using the mouse for everyday windows tasks, it was a strong let down.
