Lite-On 4012s

The Lite-On 4012s was a sort of Dark Horse member of this shootout. The price is pretty decent, but what really shocked us were the performance results. Aside from seek times, the Lite-On was leading the benchmarks on nearly all the tests. This is surprising because we expected to see a spread of different results, whereby some burners would lead in some tests, and fall behind on others.
The flip side to the Lite-On story, is its lack of documentation. The drive comes with only a very basic installation pamphlet with fewer words than the average college thesis introductory paragraph. The Lite-On drive we tested was also the second drive we received from Lite-On; the first was defective and refused to complete any burns at all at 40X write speed, so we were somewhat concerned with QA.
