MSI MS-8340
Online Price: ~$60

MSI is not well known for its optical products, but with an online price tag of $60 and performance that most holds under scrutiny, people will quickly take notice. The low price, aside from being due to MSI’s sheer purchasing power, is also likely due to the smaller 2MB buffer of the drive, but their ExactLink Buffer under-run technology seems to work well against coasters when we stress tested it.

MSI bundles Nero with their drive, but be warned that they use a limited version that will only function with the bundled drive.

Instructions wise, the MSI includes a quick installation guide and basic guide for Nero – both guides total no more than 4 pages of text, though the guides themselves are translated in 6 major languages, including Japanese and Chinese. While the instructions are sparse, people familiar with burners will likely not need them anyway. However, be warned that the instructions, even what’s provided, is nowhere near as clear as what Samsung and Plextor provided, so if you’re even the slightest bit unsure, the MSI drive will be a mystery to install.
