Samsung SW240
Online Price: ~ $90-100

Brother to the SW32 drive which came out only recently, the Samsung drive is the only drive in our roundup to use an 8MB buffer, on top of Justlink buffer underrun protection. Samsung has been putting a lot of effort into their optical devices lately, and the SW240 is a solid contender because of its price placement.

While the Samsung drive didn’t give best of class performance in its read and write tests, it did have the lowest disc seek times and fairly decent performance for the outrageous price of around $90-100 (the lowest price we found was $89).

One interesting facet of Samsung’s multinational reach is its documentation. The User’s Guide, which is nearly as thorough as Plextor’s documenation, is written in English plus 9 other languages, including Spanish, Dutch, French, and Portuguese. And unlike the MSI’s quick install guide, the manual is a thorough look at installation, suggestions, and troubleshooting. No wonder the Guide is as thick as a small novel, in spite of its small print.
