Thermaltake Toughpower 750W PSU - PAGE 4
J. Micah Grunert - Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Thermaltake has built a one of the most stable power supplies I've ever seen. And it looks good too. But when it comes down to it, performance is what really matters. I can definitely say that the Thermaltake Toughpower came out a winner.

On the one hand, the Toughpower looks nice. The gloss black finish is near flawless in application. Too bad it will remain hidden inside of your case. The cables are neat and tidy, but a modular quick connect cable system would have been nice. In fact, Thermaltake happens to sell the exact same supply, but with the aforementioned cable management system. Overall, it is an incredibly well built piece of engineering. But where it really shines is in the CrossFire testing. As for the cost, it is a little heavy at roughly $160 bucks USD. But as has always been said, you do get what you pay for.

And with any power supply, it's what's inside that counts. Probably the most important of all the voltages in any power supply is the 12V rail supply. The vast majority of components plugged into  a PSU pick up off of the 12V rail supply. As the Tough power has four, count 'em, four separate +12V rails, you're guaranteed crisp clean power delivery. Each one of these four rails can handle 18 Amps of over loading before a safety shut down is incurred. And as it was seen in the CrossFire testing, even at maximum load, voltage fluctuations were absolutely negligible.

The other rails, these being the +3.3V and the +5V will support high current loads, 30 Amps and 28 Amps respectively. But once again, the 12V rail is king. And another shining light of the Toughpower was its incredibly silent running. Few other supplies even come close. And honestly, once you drop this electron box into a case, you'll probably never hear from the Toughpower ever again. Quiet, efficient, and attractive. But there is that one shining light, the holy grail of every PSU that comes to life.

There have been only a handful of power supplies that have received the CrossFire certification, and the 750W Toughpower is one of them.
