Swiftech MCX462-V Review - PAGE 4
Ricky Nguyen - Wednesday, November 5th, 2003

Conclusion:

The Swiftech MCX462-V is an universally excellent heatsink for users that range from non-overclockers to extreme overclockers. The heatsink provides the foundation for cooling while the selected fan will provide the necessary heat removal. It is very evident that the people at Swiftech have planned, developed, and released an excellent product that caters to the computer user in every possible scenario from virtually silent operations all the way through to extreme overclockers. In order to achieve the best results with the MCX462-V, an extremely loud fan is needed which brings the noise level to that of a vacuum cleaner. However, with a fan output of less than 30 CFM, the performance of the MCX462-V is only par with other heatsinks. With its 1/2" thick copper base and 390 Helicoid pin design, this heatsink does not perform well with lower CFM fans perhaps because of the pins introducing turbulence to the airflow. Even though the MCX462-V contains mounting clips for both 80mm and 92mm fans, the better choice would be the 92mm fan. In general, if you have an 80mm fan and an 92mm fan spinning at the same number of revolutions per minute, they will produce the similar amount of noise but the 92mm one will be able to provide more air flow. Another minor problem is that switching the mounting clips can be tedious because of the location of the screws that hold them in place. A better design could have the screws mount from the bottom up instead of burying them between the Helicoid pins and just extending the length of the mounting clips.

The retention mechanism is very innovative and the sheer presence of the MCX462-V is very striking. We don't have any hesitations in recommending the MCX462-V for all users if you can afford it. Not only will you have one of the best air cooling products on the market, but those with case windows will want to show it off.

Pros:

No need to lap heatsink

Solid retention mechanism

Able to accept 80mm and 92mm fans

Excellent workmanship is very evident

Cons:

Price is quite high

Hard to install and uninstall at first

Extra care is needed to not damage motherboard during mounting/dismounting

Score: 95%
