Sony MVC-CD300 Digital Camera Review - PAGE 4

Photo Quality

There are six combinations of image quality to choose from:

  • 2048 x 1536 TIFF
  • 2048 x 1536 FINE JPEG
  • 2048 x 1536 STANDARD JPEG
  • 1600 x 1200 FINE JPEG
  • 1280 x 960 FINE JPEG
  • 640 x 480 FINE JPEG

Disclaimer: I am by no means a professional photographer. In other words, my photography skills suck. The following pictures are to show you what the camera is capable of doing.

2048x1536 FINE JPEG

Here the image is crisp and clear. The colours are very rich and well defined.

2048x1536 STANDARD JPEG

The image quality is a tiny bit poorer. It is very hard to notice the graininess.

2048x1536 FINE JPEG

Night photography! I wanted to see how this camera would work in the dark. It actually resolves low light without a flash. Street lamps are seen as well as ambient light from vehicles passing by. This is probably attributed to the Carl Zeiss lens.

2048x1536 FINE JPEG

Flash test. The first picture is taken without flash. You see nothing but wait the flash is used and voila! A bright red fire hydrant! The flash on the CD300 is adequate for some night photography as long as it is short range (no more than 10ft away).

2048x1536 FINE JPEG

Optical zoom. This is a test of the optical zoom on the CD300. It does quite a good job.

2048x1536 FINE JPEG

Just some effects you can use. Very neat! The CD300 allows several different effects to be added to the photographs including Sepia and Black and White.

2048x1536 FINE JPEG

The downside to using a spherical lens is that you get something called chromatic aberration. Look at the purple tinge at the corner of the window!

Video Quality

I have to say that the video quality is quite disappointing. I have clip that proves why. The image is poor and you can’t even see a lot of definition.

However, the audio quality is surprisingly good. The conversation is clear and the microphone also picks up some background noise.

Conclusion

As a still digital camera, the Sony CD300 has done a marvellous job. Its images were clear and the resolution was sharp. I put together a summary of my report in point form below.

PRO

  • Very sharp, high resolution images, very good colour definition
  • Low media costs (8cm CD-R offer excellent $/MB ratio)
  • Able to share images with any computer fitted with a CD-ROM drive
  • Large 2.5" LCD
  • Good low light and night performance
  • Multiple Auto Exposure Settings
  • Good solid design and build
  • Good manual features “photographer friendly”
  • Job-dial quick exposure setting (SLR similarities)
  • AF illuminator lamp
  • Long lasting battery & supplied AC adapter
  • Relatively good optical Zoom
  • USB connectivity

    CON

  • Bulky, large in size and weight
  • Time taken to initialize and finalize CD-R/RW is long and troublesome on the fly (no vibrations)
  • Battery life can be deceiving if there is a lot of disc access
  • Slow image thumbnail display due to disc seek times
  • MPEG movies only 8 frames per second (except MPEG HQ)
  • Chromatic Aberrations
  • Expensive price SSRP $1799.99 CDN
