Installing an operating system is heavily dependant on hard drive performance so I timed how long each drive took to decompress and copy files off the disc as well as install Windows. Once it was up and running, I calculated how long it took to boot and shutdown the computer.

Multitasking
Using WinRAR, I will compress our custom 100MB, 500MB and 1000MB files using the best compression setting in the ZIP format and time how long it takes the system to complete the task. At the same, I will be performing a full system scan with Microsoft Security Essentials. Both tests are fairly heavy on the hard drive and are a good indicative of actual performance.

It's quite clear that even though the Barracuda XT is faster than its predecessors in all four tests, at the end of they day it is not going to save you tons of time. Seagate's brand new 2TB drive takes the lead over his elders, but it's only a matter of a few seconds. Nothing you would notice under normal circumstances.

The price is different as well as the speed. I can understand if the review is done just for the sake of saying the review was done, but the results would be irrelevant.
I can understand if the SSDs were reviewed and compared against each other, but this comparison makes no relevance or sense.

one thing ive always wondered was why is it that there is always a single read/write head per platter? who not multiple? would that be better?

If you're looking for a 2TB HDD, correct me if I'm wrong but, you're looking for storage space not speed. If you want speed then go grab yourself a 32-64GB SSD, or make yourself a raid 5 or 10 with these drives.

its still a good idea. its not to say that this drive is crap, but its a great way for someone to determine if its worth getting an SSD, 10K, or 7200. though, for anyone wanting a 2TB drive, i doubt theyd consider much else.
