Introduction
Both ATI and NVIDIA are well known for releasing 'refresh' products generally 6-8 months after a new line of GPU's are released. Traditionally these products feature new cooling units and boosted clock speeds and occasionally come with more memory. ATI have refreshed their entire lineup this past week, slightly adjusting the specs of existing products and releasing under new SKU's at significantly lower prices. While this news may not be as exciting as an entire new GPU release, this is very good news for consumers looking to make the best of their upgrade dollar. We will be covering the rest of the lineup in a later article and taking a look at the X1950 XTX specifically today. This review covers the single card performance of the X1950 XTX, and we will follow up with a Crossfire look to round out the X1950 coverage.

The X1950 is definitely a 'refresh' product in the truest sense. ATI have made some notable changes over its predecessor, though none of these are major architectural advancements. The X1900 XTX release in February could have been seen as a refresh however there were significant enough changes to the core in the way of adding pixel pipes and optimizing the render pipeline for it to be considered a new GPU altogether. This brings us to the first true high end 'refresh' product of the X1000 series. With the X1950 XTX, ATI have made a number of changes over the X1900 XTX to increase performance while leaving the underlying workings of the GPU intact.
