There is no doubt about it. The 6600GT is the DOOM 3 card. At playable resolutions performance is not even close between the 6600GT and high end parts from yesteryear. id games are always important because so many games are based off of the id technology (the upcoming Quake 4 is based on the DOOM 3 engine). The performance difference between the NV40 family and everything else in DOOM 3 cannot be overlooked for that reason

The results are pretty CPU bound without AA/AF. With it on, we get the same story, the 6600GT just does not have enough bandwidth at 1600 compared to the 9800XT.
