Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical Review - PAGE 3
Anthony Roberts - Wednesday, May 9th, 2001

Perfection?

I’ve already read some commentary by users of the Cordless MouseMan Optical, and some of their complaints have strong merit. Some users complain about the small size of the mouse, others complain about the thumb button being “in the way”. None of these are my complaints, because I have relatively normal sized hands, and the mouse could not be more comfortable or delightful to use.

The most valid complaint pertains to the fact that the mouse never turns off. That’s right, if you sleep overnight, the mouse will remain in its FLASH mode and pulse 2 times a second – an obviously needless waste of battery power according to some users. I would tend to agree, but Logitech’s approach makes sense: they wanted a wireless mouse that offered freedom from cords, a precision sensor, and yet also the exact ease of a corded mouse. Introducing a true sleep mode could also introduce startup lag, and who wants to wait for their mouse to “warm” up before use? I barely like reaching under the desk to flip my speakers on and off. Would you really like to sit down at the computer and then have to turn on your keyboard, mouse, AND monitor?

Maybe in the future, companies will be able to come up with ultra low power standby modes controlled via the remote receivers. Then, as a computer turns on, the receiver would send the signal to the cordless mouse to activate itself. Until then, Logitech has managed to bring together two of the hottest and future savvy technologies in an industry first. It won’t improve your score in twitch games, and it isn’t a huge leap in subjective performance over other optical mice, so I wouldn’t consider it an “upgrade” if you already have an optical mouse that you’re happy with. On the other hand, the mouse is comfortable, cool to look at, and works like a charm.

Anyone looking to replace their aging mechanical mouse, or looking for wireless freedom should seriously consider the Cordless MouseMan Optical. Especially if you primarily use your computer for work or recreation, and don’t play competitively in multiplayer action games. I asked a few of my friends who deem themselves veteran gamers, and few could perceive the lag delay I refer to, so again, many of you will not notice anything in gaming.

I am extremely impressed and pleased with this latest offering from Logitech. I would even consider using it as my primary mouse, since I only play competitive online games infrequently. If you don’t mind going through 4 sets of batteries a year, or using advanced rechargeable batteries (such as the ultra useful Pure Power branded rechargeable/recyclable batteries), there is little to turn you away from the mouse – Except maybe the price.

Overall Score: 90%

If the mouse had a higher reporting rate and better gaming performance, this mouse would have easily scored a 93% and up!
