HP Jornada 565 PDA Review - PAGE 4Denis Chan - Friday, October 19th, 2001
Features
The Pocket PC 2002 version of the OS doesn't look too much different to me than the previous one. I find many customer-requested enhancements included in the software which includes additional productivity software, backup utilities, multimedia applications and an image viewer.
The 'HP Application' has changed where you can set Display, Volume and Power at the same menu. Under Display, you can set Outdoor, Indoor, Low Power, or My Preference. Under Volume, you can pick four different profiles, which are Silent, Loud, Meeting, or My Preference. As for Power, you can turn on by screen-tapping, hot key-press, record button-press. The display will adjust to device when it could not go into auto-suspend mode.
There's a HP Backup application program, which you can save the backup file to a storage card, to Flash Rom, or to internal storage. The 'Memory' menu is the same with the familiar tabs for Storage Card and Running Programs. Windows Media Player 8.0 is also included and can play WMA files and MP3 format files.
There were some new bundled games that come with the Jornada 565, like Metalion (Demo) and Pocket Athlete (Demo). Basically, these games showcase the power of the new OS in many different ways, such as speed, sound, and graphics. The clear screen color, sharpness and loud volume of the Jornada 565 make the experience so much more like “Game Boy”.
There's also Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, the usual File Explorer and MSN Messenger. The built-in Pocket PC versions of Microsoft Word and Excel are certainly good enough to write up notes and documents. Many tasks are performed in a fairly streamlined manner with a single taps on the screen with the stylus.
Conclusion
The Jornada 565 is ideal for customers upgrading from earlier HP devices or if you are thinking about switching from a Palm device to a Pocket PC of any kind. HP's Jornada 560 series is truly an amazing PDA, which runs on the new and improved Pocket PC 2002 OS from Microsoft. The Jornada 565 performs really well in speed, screen color, sound and video. It is true 16-bit reflective TFT 65,536 colors display colors and 206MHz 32-bit processor. The CompactFlash Card Type I card slot is a great option if there's a need for memory expansion or other accessories. The Jornada 565 does have its "bleeding edges". The latest Pocket PC OS is not always stable as the previous version and error screens (blue screens) appear quite often. It might hold back some potential buyers.
