HP Jornada 565 PDA Review - PAGE 3
Denis Chan - Friday, October 19th, 2001

At a Glance

HP designed the new look of the Jornada and the improved stylus is back in the slot it is supposed to be rather than stuffed inside a removable cover. The front is occupied by a beautiful 16-bit reflective TFT 65,536 colors display screen, which is brighter and smoother.

A new central navigation pad at bottom-center, a smaller Action button directly below it, and four primary quick launch application buttons default to the HP Home Menu, Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks buttons along the side. The small power button sits on the bottom left while the tinny, heavy sounding speaker on the right.

On the left, you'll see the protected compartment for the backup battery (CR-2032 coin cell battery) with a lock, the scroll pad and the red voice-recorder button. With the 560 series, you get a backup battery, which may protect your data. The rear is flat with the removable lithium-polymer battery taking three quarters of the space with a lock. The lithium-polymer battery may last as long as 14 hours on normal use (front light off). This is a definite improvement over the 520 series models, and an acknowledgement by HP, that the accessories tend to drain battery power more than anything else.

The top houses the CompactFlash Type I slot, the earphone jack, infrared port, stylus slot and charging light indicator. A lighted indicator on top glows red while charging and green when it's finished, and you can set the light to flash to remind you about upcoming appointments. The CF Type I slot comes with a detachable back-cover from the Jornada 565, you can easily slide Type I cards into the slot like the add-on pocket camera and then slide the back-cover back on. A red RESET pinhole button on the top left beside the CompactFlash slot.

The bottom section is where the power connector and USB or serial based docking station connectors. Besides the small microphone, there are two pinholes as well, which I think to fit in an add-on module at the bottom for the future use, such as keyboard.
