CineBench

The Core 2 Duo E8500 did well at stock and overclocked speeds on CineBench; the single threaded tests really were ranked by pure megahertz, and for the multi-threaded tests, the quad cores obviously carried the day.

POV-Ray

The E8500 did quite well at stock, and decently when overclocked - but the multi-threaded results were dominated by the quad core parts.

Especially, as you've noted, out of the enthusiast end of things. A 12% max stable OC is not even worth the effort.
