The E8500 does quite well in the Sandra CPU benchmark, both at stock and overclocked speeds.

The Core 2 Duo E8500 excels at the Sandra memory benchmark at normal and overclocked speeds - it topped the chart as a matter of fact!

Especially, as you've noted, out of the enthusiast end of things. A 12% max stable OC is not even worth the effort.
