HP Jornada 525 Review - PAGE 1
Denis Chan - Monday, September 17th, 2001

Introduction

The Jornada 525 PocketPC represents the entry-level of HP's handheld computing devices. Unlike other companies who manufacture PDAs, HP decided to focus their efforts in the market of strictly colour PDAs. PDAs will at some point rival the desktop PC, but in the meantime HP brings the 525 to the table their entry unit with most of the features of the higher end models except in a scaled down version. The 525 comes with 16MB of Memory instead of 32 MB on other Jornada "family" models. (e.g. the 548 has 32MB of memory, plus a USB sync cradle connector included). The 525 device feels very smooth with its polished silver metal finish. Unlike the Handspring products which come with a hard plastic protective screen cover, the 525 comes with a leather slipcase. The stylus (plastic pen to use on the screen) slides into a sleeve built into the inside of the Jornada's slipcover. I didn't find this as convenient as those PDAs which have a contained slot on the unit itself which allows one to pull out & slide in the stylus at will. When placed in your hand, the unit seems rather on the heavy side compared to other devices, but it definitely feels solid.

At a Glance

Looking at the top of the 525 you will see a Compact Flash card slot and on either side there is a standard 3.5mm Stereo earphone jack and IrDA infrared port. Holding the 525 directly in front of you, we have the Notification LED on the central top panel - this is a blinking green LED indicates an alarm or reminder. While your HP Jornada is connected to AC power, a solid red LED indicates that your HP Jornada is charging. A solid green LED indicates that your HP Jornada is fully charged. A blinking red LED indicates that the display is off (but the device is still on).

At the base of the display, there are four one-touch application launch buttons including “Home Menu”, “Contacts List”, “Calendar”, and “Task List”. The “Home Menu” button is used to access system applications such as the clock, files explorer, application programs (Internet Explorer, Email, Word, Excel, Media Player), memory, and power status. The screen contains 9 application cubes to press on. With another push of the Home Menu button, you the 525 will scroll through the next set of applications in memory. Beneath the four buttons you will find the Power button which turns the device on or off. One of the most convenient features of HP Jornada is the “instant on” feature. With instant on, there is no waiting for HP Jornada to start up or shut down; you can start working immediately by pressing the On/Off button. You can also turn on your HP Jornada simply by tapping the touch screen.
