Globalwin FLK50 Athlon Cooler Review - PAGE 1
Richard Harris - Thursday, August 17th, 2000

Introduction

Globalwin FLK50 Product Shot
Global Win has been one of the leading companies to provide PC manufactures and oveclockers all over the world with some of the best computing/cooling solutions. They have provided us with three of their top of the line K7 coolers, the FLK50, VOS32, and WAA08 -which is a very unique fan duct system designed to really help in extreme overclocking situations or when you want to keep things a little bit cooler inside the case. Lets get started with the more basic of three units, the FLK50 –single fan cooler.

Impressions / Installation

The FLK50 is a single fan -full sized Athlon cooler specifically designed for the Asus K7M motherboard, however the size and efficiency of this unit make it a perfect for most any Athlon system. As already stated, this cooler has a single high-speed fan (4200rpm @ 26 CFM) installed in the middle of a full sized heat sink –blowing air down towards the CPU. There is a single 3-wire power connector running off the fan, to allow for hardware monitoring and easy installation.

The heatsink is made from a lightweight aluminum alloy material with the fins being grouped together in groups of six on the ends and 10 in the middle –leaving about a 2-fin gap between each group. This was a rather odd design –but I noticed right away (once installed) that it allowed for airflow to come directly between each fin group –thus helping to displace the heat better.

Installation of the FAK50 was a cinch! There wasn’t an install guide or any other documentation that was included –but it’s a fairly self-explanatory process. Simply snap the W shaped bracket down onto the Athlon CPU metal chassis (have a screwdriver handy) and you’re ready to go! This was a welcome change when compared to some other Athlon coolers that require either an Athlon dis-mount from the motherboard, or a complete dismantling of the Athlon.
