When I looked at your Charts there.. I notaiced the Radeon 9700, Over a year old now.. Is still able to hang in there with the top nVidia cards...

What a Relic don't you think?

That's why many people think the R3XX architecture is so forward thinking. Owners of 9700PRO are still hanging in there at the high end with several games.

Exellent! Review, finally at high resolutions the FX series cards are showing the power they have and I was shocked to see the FX5900/5950 blow the Radeon 9800Pro out of the water at higher resolutions and the Radeon was even overclocked, LOL this is great. I may of missed this but did you use the new Nvidia driver 52.16 for the review? I wonder how that new driver will work with my GFFX 5200-ultra. I also noticed the size of the 4 cards you showed and I didn't know there was such a significant size difference in the FX5900 and the R9800pro, definitely a size issue there with consumers with smaller ATX cases. I was planning on buying a Radeon9800pro at the end of the year since they will be a little cheaper but now I think I will wait and see the prices and and cards available and also wait to see what the newer card maker XGI will offer with the V5/V8 duel GPU's 375mhz-GPU/500mhz-DDR-DDR2, so I will keep my eye open for that review Redemption!

Guys... I am doing some overclocking on the 5950 to see what we can do... and I think this thing will be a MONSTER for overclockers... So far I can get 10% increase in Halo benchmarks and I'm only overclocking from 475Mhz core to 500Mhz core. I am sure I can hit 520Mhz+ on the core and hopefully ~1.05Ghz on the memory... hehehehe

We must wait for the 9800XT before we can worship the 5950 though..

Well I think we'll find the 9800XT to be a better overall card than the 5950. But for the 5700 it might be a different story - Andy will have that story (including vs 9600XT charts) for you on Monday.

All cards in this review can play TODAYS games at good framerates, but what about the games comming out next year?

Is the FX5950 as slow in DX9 as the FX5900 and FX5600 are???
Or is nVidia's new driver really gonna solve all the DX9 issues? (i doubt it)

I think it's silly to peek at 5% or 10% increases in "old" benchmarks, while Half Life 2 still shows a HUGE gap between nVidia and ATI.
(where even the R9600pro out performs the FX5900 !!!).

I would like to see some Half Life 2 benchmarks on this FX5950, or some synthetic shader 2.0 benchmarks.

I think buying a $500 nVidia (or even a $150 one) without knowing that it will do in the games you want to play in a couple of months time is to much of a financial risk.

i enjoy neoseeker but am frustrated that writers for reviews and news are apparently unaware that their articles should fit on an 8&1/2 by 11 inch page. news articles look like they should fit on portrait but when printed you have to redo on landscape. reviews ...the charts fit but words are lost even in landscape . surely the writers are older than 6th graders and most 6th graders know limitations of line widths. either get a printer friendly version option on your site or teach your writers how to use a word processor knowledge is great but if you can't use your computer properly we have to wonder what you really know!!!!

Hi albert,

Thanks for bringing up your concerns. If you link to

http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/fx5950ultra/print.html

you should see the printer friendly version of the article. I printed a test page on my printer and it seems OK so I hope it works on yours too.

That page is linked on the bottom of the last page on every article - not a very easy link to find, and I think we will improve it's visibility.

Some of the comments about theFX's pixel shader 2 performance may not be an issue if what i've read about the new directX 9.1 is anything to go by. Which showed a 60% performance increase in the Pixel Shader 2 area

Just for a reference ATI have admitted that jedi academy performs poorly with the radeon range, mainly when AA and AF are enabled (when full it basically doesn't even run). This has actually been fixed in the recently released catalyst 3.9.

And we'll be using 3.9 on the ATI cards when we publish our Gainward 5950 review next week
