With Intel already on the DDR2 bandwagon full-force, and AMD hopping on with Socket AM2 later this year, the industry is making a slow but steady shift to this improved memory technology. The high-end memory manufacturers wasted no time in raising the bar with products targetted at the overclocker and enthusiast crowd.
On such manufacturer is Crucial, and they have a new product for us today. Their "Ballistix PC2-6400" DDR2 RAM aims for tight timings and high frequencies -- in the order of 800 MHz. A basic specification sheet follows:
- Module Size: 512MB
- Package: Ballistix 240-pin DIMM
- Configuration: 64Mb x 64
- DIMM Type: UNBUFFERED
- Error Checking: NON-ECC
- Speed: DDR2-800
- Voltage: 2.2V
- Memory Timings: 4-4-4-12
What is Ballistix memory?
Crucial's "Ballistix" line of memory modules is designed to operate at tight timings and high frequencies -- two things that performance freaks aim for in their system memory. Here's how Crucial describes the line:
"The Ballistix line is specifically built for performance enthusiasts who want to push the performance envelope without worrying about data loss or corruption, mysterious intermittent errors and display problems, or worse - the dreaded BSOD! The Ballistix line of high-performance memory modules features advanced speed grades, low latencies, and integrated aluminum heat spreaders. "
Will this memory have the muscle that we expect it to have? Is it worth your hard-earned cash? You'll just have to read on to find out!
