Conclusions
The Chill Vent takes a different approach to processor cooling that does not require the end user to pull off their existing heatsink / fan combo which is a boon for the average computer user who may not feel comfortable removing and reinstalling a heatsink. This is beneficial in a number of ways; it reduces the chance of breaking a processor, improper mounting of a heatsink and potentially voiding your warranty. As the Chill Vent requires no modification to anything inside the case and in most cases just sits on top of the current heatsink/fan, it can be removed should the need for servicing come up. We observed 3-4 C temperature differences in most configurations with the Chill Vent something that falls within the lower range of numbers quoted from Kool Solutions.
Unlike a lot of aftermarket CPU fans that are extremely loud, the Chill Vent adds little noise as the 80 mm fan does not spin particularly fast but it offers temperature reduction that is comparable to higher performing coolers. The P4 OEM HSF is a fairly solid cooler already and to be able to improve upon it without adding a lot of noise is impressive. Sidney from Kool Solutions noted that the relationship between the CPU and ambient temperature is not linear - the Chill Vent performs better in environments with a higher ambient temperature and higher processor temperatures. Unfortunately this could not be verified in our lab as the ambient temperature stays close to 26 C at most times but may be something to keep in mind.
The Chill Vent ranges from 19$ to 34$ depending on the configuration. The price is fair considering that the Chill Vent is a mobile solution and can likely be used in conjunction with a new processor which is especially relevant if you are switching platforms. The Chill Vent is an elegant solution especially for the mainstream user. It avoids the pitfalls of a lot of the high performance aftermarket coolers that just toss a huge (and generally loud) fan onto the heatsink but instead explores the computing environment a little more carefully and has a unique product that is able to cool well but yet keep the noise levels down. Definitely recommended.
Sidney was kind enough to forward a couple pictures of upcoming versions of the Chill Vent. I really dig the clear one which should be available in about a month
