BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC - PAGE 9
Tom Karpik - Thursday, July 14th, 2005

Honestly, what can I say that isn’t already obvious? I really enjoyed working with NVIDIA’s GeForce 7800 GTX back when Terren and I were working on the preview article – it was reasonably quiet, blazingly fast, and had a number of new features that had me very excited (once I saw transparency anti-aliasing, Half-Life 2 looks like butt on my X800 XT PE back at home now). Once you go TAA, there’s no going back.

Given that, I just had the opportunity to work with an even faster video card which otherwise remained the same: the BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC. Perhaps the single most compelling aspect of the entire BFG bundle is the fact that the MSRP is identical to that of “run-of-the-mill” 7800 GTXs. A very close second is the awesome bundle BFG has included with this top-of-the-line card: a lifetime warranty, a full version game and video editing/authoring application, t-shirt, Teflon “Slick Pads” for your mouse, two DVI adapters, a TV adapter, and an HDTV adapter. While some of these items are to be expected with any new video card, BFG really has raised the bar.

There’s simply no argument about it – for the same price, you’re getting a faster card, a lifetime warranty, and a cool bundle to boot. If you’ve decided to shell out ~$600 on a new video card, there’s absolutely no reason not to buy the BFG GeForce 7800 GTX, unless you can find a similarly-clocked model by another manufacturer.

All of those pros and praise aside, there’s a big ugly aspect: No matter how you look at it, you’re still putting the smack down on your wallet. Six hundred dollars is nothing to scoff at, unless your money grows on trees – in which case, I want a few of those trees. While these kind of sums are to be expected for a newly-launched product based on a new architecture, I can’t see myself putting down that kind of money for a video card (I got very, very lucky with my X800 XT PE – that’s another story for another day). In a few months’ time, you can expect to see 7800 GTXs priced a tad more affordably.

Any enthusiast looking for the next generation of gaming hardware ought not to look past the BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC. I’m giving this card the only award it deserves. Good job, BFG.
