Introduction
While ATI have put in a very solid show at the high end since the release of the X1800 XT last October, below the $500 price point they have struggled to launch a product that really steals the show. The situation has been especially unfortunate in light of the ground NVIDIA has been making with the 7900 GT. The original contender-in-red for the performance segment was the X1800 XL, however poor performance against the 7800 GT, high prices and low availability kept that card from becoming a best seller.
ATI after the launch of the X1900 XT in January hacked the prices of the X1800 XT to very reasonable levels but did not make much of an effort to promote this card as their mainstay performance segment product. This decision was likely made due to production costs, and while the X1800 XT was a faster card, the X1900 GT released around May used cut down X1900 XT cores making it more economical for ATI to produce.
The X1900 GT has served quite well as ATI's mainstream card but in terms of popularity, hasn't quite managed to match the 7900 GT. ATI are having their fourth attempt in ten months at the performance segment and are ultimately doing so with a fully fledged X1900 XT, minus some memory. With the major chain partners including Connect3D, Sapphire, Powercolor and HIS gearing up for a retail launch next week, take an early look at what will inevitably be a very hot card.
